Edelbrock Pro Tuner EFI

Not sure if this is the right section for this, but I'll post it anyway....

Be kind to me!!!! The only fuel system I've used to date is a carb, and a number of multi-carb systems... I know how to make them work, and the basics of flow, CFM, and fuel distribution is the same, just the application is a bit different. I'm considering coming out of the stone age carbs and moving up to an Edelbrock Pro Tuner system....

I have a heavily modded '82 Berlinetta, good suspension, frame ties, considerably lighter then stock, and all the goodies.

So far for the engine i have a Dart SHP block, bored to 4.125". Crank will be a Howard's 3.750 stroker with 6.00" Howard's rods, and Diamond pistons. Heads will be either Brodix or AFR, cam will be a solid roller---specs still pending on cam and heads.... Compression Ratio (depending on head choice) will be in the 11.0 to 11.5:1 range. If I were to carb the engine, it would be a 750 mechanical secondary carb, reworked to run E-85.

Curious if anyone here is running the Pro Tuner set up, and how complicated it is to tune. I've read the tech info at the Edelbrock site, doesn't seem to be too terribly difficult.....

Also, is anyone running this or similar system on E-85???? With a carb, the jets have to be considerably larger, along with larger squirters and a few other mods....

Edelbrock advertises the system as capable of supporting up to 1,000 horsepower....my engine will be somewhere in the 475-500 horse range.
Could I reasonably expect more performance by going EFI, or is the significant change going to be just the tuneability of the unit??? Is there any reliable data out there on injector sizes, fuel pressure, etc when running E-85 in the unit...???

Thought I would run my questions by some of you "real world" EFI guys before I went to the Edelbrock techs with them.... I'm not implying the Edelbrock guys would stretch the truth, but then they are in the business of selling parts!!!!!

So anyway, should I try the EFI, or stick to the carb and a system I already know how to make work????

Thanks in advance!

Just another dinosaur!!!!

I think this would be better asked to the alternative efi boys?

I think you should go EFI with your car, or use some out there carb set up like 4 webers or something, but, I think your post probably belongs in the ECM/ DFI forum, I think the pro tuner is an ECM, not the manifold and injectors, looks good though.

On the Edelbrock site when I go to Pro tuner, they show to pick the components to make up the Pro Tuner system, hard parts and electronics are listed separately for selection purposes, Guess you buy each set of components separately to form the entire package.... Looks like I might as well get hold of Edelbrock and see what their techas have to say. The specs are very impressive on the system.. a bit spendy, but quality usually is...

As to the Webbers, I've run them!!! They're a bit of aggravation to set up, balance, and sychonize but once you get them right they work great!!!!!! Another consideration for the '82 is the Hilborn straight stack injectors switched over to EFI....

I just think that as orriginal and one off as your car is, it needs something more than a holley 4 bbl or a stealth ram can offer. I like the idea of hilborn stuff, Maybe something from marcella

thats way out of my price range though, but they look awesome!

Re: Edelbrock Pro Tuner EFI

Yeah, I've used custom built intakes on a couple cars over the years.... I dunno what I'll end up doing.... Most of the other engine stuff is either on hand or in the works right now....... Whatever it is, it's got to be a hard working horsepower producting monster... Don't need no sissy power engine in my '82!!! Fortunately, I don't have to decide in a hurry....still lots of fab work, and body work to do..... I am going to do some taling with techs this week, was hoping there was a few people here on 3rd Gen running this Edelbrock system, guess not...Maybe it's still too new?????

Re: Edelbrock Pro Tuner EFI

Did you try asking the guys in the alternative port EFI section? They might have better knowledge of that system than a bunch of TBI guys. I dunno, that's just my guess.

Re: Edelbrock Pro Tuner EFI

My choice would be a GM puter (8746) modified by dymanicefi to run a port system and provide LEARN functionality. EFI Manifold would be Edel or Holley single plane with a sequential 4 barrel TB by same manufacturer or Accel. Order a harness from painless. Cost a lot less than the Edel system or any other aftermarket.
