TBI manual swap problems??

i have a TBI (actually a crossfire injection) on my car. it is an automatic. i want to swap in a t5 manual (with mechanical speedo). my question is will i have any problems with the ECM? ive heard just disconnect the TCC and it will be fine. wont that throw the ECM off?? even if i have to jumper something to make it think its working. wont it still make the ECM say WTF?? And what about the P/N switch? ive heard to turn it into a clutch anticipate switch. would this work or will this make the ECM say WTF?? im concerned my car will have a problem running correctly or dying on decel or something like that. help me shed some light on this

Re: TBI manual swap problems??

I am still tryng to work out the kinks on my '83 cfi z28 5 speed swap. the clutch switch on the peddle was bad, so I bypassed the starter.
run the hatch wire to the parking brake switch the hatch button will work if the brake is on and/or the key is off.
If you leve the park/neutral switch as an open circuit, the car will always think it is in gear, cousing the check engine light to come on at high idle(ecm thinks in gear+high rpm+no vss signal=bad p/n switch or bad vss) I tried using a brake light switch on the clutch, but when driving like a sports car the ecm said"WTF!!!" it did not like seeing the switch change from in gear and out and back in. I tried using the parking brake, but had high roving idle untill I pulled the brake. The best so faw has been simply having the park/neutral circuit closed so the ecm thinks it is in park/neutral all the time. at some point I think I will get a later modle tbi ecm and see what happens.

Good luck, and have fun. my car(alright it is my wife's) went from being a slight kick in the pants on hard accel. to HOLLY S*** once the t5 and 3.73 rear were installed the rear and trans came from the same doner car, so the speedo is also correct, I just connected the cable to the trans and all is good there.

Re: TBI manual swap problems??

thanx for the info. maybe i will have to change proms to one for a manual tranny. i was thinking of changing the entire ECM to a newer one from a TBI vehicle with manual tranny but im not sure if i can change it because my car is a crossfire injection. i would think it would work as long as its from a 305.

Re: TBI manual swap problems??

The only reason I am thinking about changing the ecm is that crossfire was only offered with an auto. and I am not sure that a chip from a later ecm will work.

Re: TBI manual swap problems??

Actually crossfire injection was available with a manual tranny. the only thing is that it was only available in 82. in 82 it was only a 4 speed tho but that wont make a difference 4 5 or 6 speed, its programed for a manual.

Re: TBI manual swap problems??

I know that the ecm is a plug-n-play change between the 82 and 83(my 82 t/a is running with a 84 vette ecm-same ecm as 83 f-body, just different chip) but are the chips inside the same? I know the 82 and 83 are vastly different in size

Re: TBI manual swap problems??

as I was typing, it donned on me that the 84 vette did have a manual option, so I looked around and found that Hypertech - Power Chip
Part Number: 154371 is a California legal chip for the 84 vette w/manual trans but I think those had the 4+3 manual that got some weird gear splitting from the ecm, I wonder if anyone has tried one of those chips on a 5.0 with a 5-speed, I know that I have not seen any adverse affects of the stock 5.7 chip on my t/a

Re: TBI manual swap problems??

i would think the ECM from a vette would have different programming because its for a 350. the chip size however i have no clue. i would think they would all be interchangable because they are all crossfire ECMs and i would think they would be the same model ECM

Re: TBI manual swap problems??

:the 82 t/a and 83 Camaro are different, but the 83 camaro and 84 vette use the same ecm.
but anyway... I just found that jet proformance sells a chip that they claim will work in a 83 5-speed tbi camaro, so I just went to their website and asked about using that chip in a conversion such as ours..I will post what answer I get. mabe that will be the easyest option for keping the computer from saying "WTF!" plus if there is any power gain, even better

Re: TBI manual swap problems??

I got an e-mail back, and I don't think they understoot my question, they told me that the chip will not help my transmission.

Re: TBI manual swap problems??

I dont know what a crossfire injection is, but I switched to T5 from A4 and did not change the ecm. Mine is a 89 TBI L03 Camaro.

However I just bought a manual ECM to replace the auto. I have noticed a change in RPM, it's a little higher and to bring it down I just need to tap on gas and it comes right down. I believe I need to install a spring on the Throttle, but since the ecm was California and I hear FED is better performance wise I just went for the ecm swap.
