305 TBI Air/Fuel Mix Question

Hi folks, I'm new here and to Chevy let alone Camaro. But I just picked up a 92 Camaro the other day, and it's runnin really rich. It's a stock 92 305 RS and I have not checked anything as I haven't a clue (did I mention I'm new?). Anyways I'd really like some help since A) I want as much power as it'll yield, and B) I live in Cali and smog is a B&%$#. I have to get it smogged by next month so I can get my tags.

Do a complete tuneup on it. does it have a catalytic converter on it? If it doesnt that would make it smell rich. Where in california you located?

Santa Barbara area, and it has a cat but I just got an exhaust today and the guy said I probably need a new cat. But my dad checked the plugs today and there is some blackening and he agrees that its running rich.

Good possibility it is the coolant temperature sensor (CTS). Front of intake manifold with a two-wire connector. When the connector starts to corrode the resistance increases and the ECM thinks that the engine is colder then it really is.

In this case the best bet is to replace both the sensor and the connector. For troubleshooting can use a scan tool to see what the ECM is seeing for the coolant temperature.

OTOH, if the connector shows corrosion, time to replace them.
