Simple ways to increase power?
Im only 16 and ive got a 305 Tbi. Christmas is coming soon and im getting money and a 100 dollar advanced auto gift card. I just wanted some easy ways to get some power power out of my car. I love the power she has but i just want a little more. I cant really think of much other than a chrome air intake,a bigger cam, Higher quality spark lug wires (Already got high quality spark plugs NGK), and yeah. I now the simpliest way would be just to swap out the 305 for a 350,but right now im just gonna keep the 305. Ive pretty much rebuilt half the thing.
I was even thinking a turbo or supercharger. Is it worth it?
Leave your comments and help me out! haha Thanks guys

Cool man, I'm 17 here and your also in IN. Just want to tell you, don't even think about a turbo or supercharger. Trust me, that is not going to be in your budget unless you have several grand laying around. Here are a few cheap things that you could do. Also 3.71 gears in your T/A? It is probably the 3.23 or 2.73's.
What I would do first of all is get a full exhaust from headers, y-pipe, full exhaust with no cat. You said a chrome air cleaner, so I assume you have a carb. What carb and intake do you have on the motor now? Also cheap is a shiftkit, and a nice shifter such as the megashifter.
HEI Distributor
8mm Spark plug wires
Spark plugs
Air Cleaner is cheap, and try to run the thickest filter you can.
Cold Air intake - made my own for like 40$
Headers - $90 for flowtech shorties, and like $110 for y-pipe?
Full Exhaust - $300 for flowmaster
Rear end gears - could be a little pricey.
700r4 Shift Kit - ~$100?
Fiberglass hood, saves some weight
FWIW, when I got my car I just did a bunch of cosmetic stuff to it. Such as new headliner, and all my interior plastics painted black.
Since you have said you pretty much half rebuilt the thing, buy everything that will swap over to a 350, if you want that later.

Re: Simple ways to increase power?
Yeah you have TBI-Throttle body injection thats why you posted in the TBI section. For 100 bucks you cant do much. Advice dont waste money on a coil. You can either do a open element air cleaner or make up a custom Cold air induction system (do a search on here and you'll see what I am talking about) do a full tuneup. Bump up your timing to 6-8 degress (its free)! Then upgrade your exhaust system, headers, and catback exhaust. You'll get better MPG and HP. Once you exhausted most of the bolt on stuff then start talking about cam swaps and stuff.

And im doin the timing right now! haha. The old owner had it all messed up. 180 degrees off=/. He also messed with the timing screw on the carb, which i thought it was idiot proof but i guess not! haha. And headers...hmm didnt think about that!
alright thanks man

Re: Simple ways to increase power?
I didn't see that it was in the TBI section
My previous owner had full exhaust up to the stock '78 truck manifolds, and I also found out that my 305, was actually a 350 a week or so after I bought it.
Getting a good tune is the best thing you could do for free.
Also headers made a world of difference, and it sounded better too.

Re: Simple ways to increase power?
well that pic isnt really a cold air kit. Being that its sucking in hot air the fan is pulling through the radiator. You really want the inlet of the cold air to be outside of the engine compartment.

It a design. you can copy that routing out to and cut out a hole and go into the wheel well if you make it longer.

i would say throttle body spacer and a cold air intake. though i am not sure if you can get either of those at advance auto.
