Another TBI Won't Start But Found An Issue With Fuel Lines

I read alot of posts on here but don't normally post because I usually find my answers but I can't find one on this. I have a 90 RS V8 (90,000 miles) all factory under the hood and had a no start issue. I thought it was the fuel pump because I could not hear it run with the key on. I replaced the pump with a Delphi, new sock, and an in line filter. Now I can hear the pump run but still no fuel to the injectors. I took the ignition module and it tested bad. So I replaced it. All the rest under the distributor looked fine. Still no start. I unhooked the 2 fuel lines from the back of the TBI turned the key on and I'm only getting fuel out of 1 line (driver's side). Is one a return or both fuel. What would cause this if they are both fuel lines? If they are both fuel lines do both run to the tank or do they T off under the car. It will start with pouring gas down the throttle body but runs until thats all gone then cuts off. I did check the codes and all I get is 12. If someone can help that would be great. The VATS light works but it is not on so I'm assuming its not VATS related.

Thanks,
Bryan

Re: Another TBI Won't Start But Found An Issue With Fuel Lines

Larger line is a feed line, smaller one is a return line - thus only 1 feed line.

You mentioned replacing inline fuel filter - the stock one, or did you add one somewhere? Stock filter is just in front of driver rear wheel on framerail.

1989 means VATS - are the injectors spraying when attempting to crank? VATS interrupts both ignition and injectors - maybe someone hacked the ignition only and VATS is still interrupting power to the injectors.

Maybe (I don't know for sure - throwing out ideas) the fuel pressure regulator inside the TBI unit is bad (or clogged)?

Re: Another TBI Won't Start But Found An Issue With Fuel Lines

It has the stock inline fuel filter under the driver's side. No the injectors are not spraying. The security light on the dash works but it is not staying on so I'm assuming the VATS is working properly. This car is all stock including it still has the smog pump inacted. Fuel is pumping up to the TBI but not coming out of the injectors.

I didn't think about the fuel pressure regulator in the TBI.

Would a bad fuel pressure regulator have these symptoms?

Take your fuel line off the tbi and make sure the fuel pump is pumping away. If so, bad injectors imo.

Maybe if absolutely no fuel pressure.
Also make sure the both plugs are plugged in the distributor.

Injector fuse should be 10A.

Re: Another TBI Won't Start But Found An Issue With Fuel Lines

Okay I got out there this morning messing with it. I checked the fuses in the block and they are all good. I unplugged the injectors and took the top off the TB. Cleaned everything. Put it back together and now it runs but only the pass. side injector is spraying. Any idea why the drivers side is not spraying? Are there one fuse total or one fuse to each injector?

Thanks

What do the 2 metal looking 30 AMP fuses go to in the fuse box?

how many miles on injectors? If 100K+ I would exchange at FIC injectors for rebuilt ones. Odds are if you get them spraying they may not spray like you would hope.

Re: Another TBI Won't Start But Found An Issue With Fuel Lines

I checked both fuses in the fuse box and they are good. I did criss cross the injector wires and still no spray from the driver's side but the pass side was spraying as before. It looks like it did have some drip along with the spray. Do you think it is the injector or ECM? Thanks for the help. It sure is narrowing the problem down. The car as 90,000 miles on it.

Turn Ign on but engine off. you should see a fast blink of CE and then solid on. That will rule out ECU and chip.

Re: Another TBI Won't Start But Found An Issue With Fuel Lines

These guys do good injector service for very reasonable cost,

http://www.witchhunter.com/

http://www.lindertech.com/

Sounds like the car may have been sitting or gotten some junk in the tank & the injectors need cleaned, that one may be plugged or stuck.

Re: Another TBI Won't Start But Found An Issue With Fuel Lines

Thanks for all the help. I sent my injectors to FIC last Wednesday and am waiting to see what they find. After 90,000 miles and being 20 years old I don't think it could hurt to have them rebuilt. I will post what I find out.

Re: Another TBI Won't Start But Found An Issue With Fuel Lines

It was my injectors. I had FIC to rebuild them. I got them today and had it running in 15 minutes. Still has a small stumble on takeoff but there is no telling how long its been since its had a tune-up. Thanks everyone and especially FIC.
