Plugs, Wires, Distributor, Smog, Intake etc

I have finally begun to do some maintenance on my 92 rs. Removed intake, going to remove AIR pump and install hooker headers and all new plugs, wires and distributor.

I have a few questions. First is what is the best brand for the plugs, wires and distributor. I have used the E3 plugs before on other cars and they seem really good but dont know how they are for this car.

Next question is when i took off my intake the passenger side rear port for antifreeze was blocked off with a steel insert in the gasket, y is this? the new gasket i got doesnt have this.

When i remove the AIR pump and i unplug the two plugs from the box that sits on top of the valve cover would this make a light on my dash come on?

Thank guys

-Joe

AIR pump removal will not set SES light. But you get no gains from removing it. Did you read the www.thirdgen.org/serpentine article?

Are you replacing the entire distributor, or just the cap?

I ask because, if there was no ignition issue, then there's no need to replace the distributor (if it ain't broke don't fix it).

You have a computer controlled distributor - kind of limits what is available as a replacement. And caps are caps are caps - no need for any "brand" anything.

Plugs: Personally I stick with the tried and true AC/Delco standard plugs, but others like the E3's as well.

Wires: Again, wires are wires (on a stock engine) - just grab a set.

If you have oney burning a hole in your pocket - you can buy whatever you like. But, anything aftermarket "performance" (ie high dollar) on a 305 TBI motor is just throwing cash away really - cash that could be spent for go fast, suspension upgrades, or braking.

For example ...

Rubber brake lines - unless YOU have replaced them, I guarantee they are in need, and that will make ALOT of difference in your stopping power.

Wonderbar - if you don't have one, GET ONE!

Shocks/struts - again, if YOU didn't replace, they probably need it. Same with tie rod ends, ball joints, centerlink, idler arm

See my point? Why spend $200+ on a fancy set of wires and a new distributor that will do nothing for you when your car NEEDS money spent elsewhere - spend your money wisely. I LOVE spending other people's money! But I HATE to see it wasted where it doesn't help.

I totally understand what you mean about the money and i def do not have a lot if it. I did read the article about the smog pump, i just want to unclutter the engine. Nothing is wrong wih my ignition but i figured since i have it out i might as well replace it because it was all crusted over, looks like water got in there at one point.

Thanks

AC delco plugs. If you want a red distributor cap u can buy an msd cap and rotor kit. Like 26 dollars. Again wires are wires pretty much. But if you want a certain color then buy an aftermarket performance wire. I'm not sure about the gasket. Sorry

Oh - the gasket - the new one is fine. Some have it plugged, some don't. There were some SBC heads that routed coolant differently and didn't use that port - but on your car I don't think it matters. For extra comfort, post up the gasket question all by itself in the engine tech section so that it's better seen, or PM fivekid7 or sofakingdom or one of the other many engine experts.
