Custom TBI swap, Knock sensor setup?

So I recently swapped all the TBI parts off my 1992 Chevy Caprice wagon 350 onto a 1967 Buick 340 In my Scout II. Including Custom making a distributor by combining the 350 distributor with the Buick one, and a good bit of machining. Overall it works well. But of course a few bugs to work out, and soon hopefully EBL. I've been getting codes for EGR, of course, there being no EGR valve or solinoid hooked up. And Code 43 for The EST. I used the stock knock sensor off the 350. But due to block design, i could not thread it straight into the block drain hole. I had to use a short nipple and a couple bushings to make it work. What I'm wondering is how sensitive is the sensor to location, and the effect of the adapters on it? Does it sense Via the coolant? Or feel it through the steel of the block? I need to run it with the scanner on it to see if it sees knock at all, and still determine if the engine just needs more timing or if I need to rethink the knock sensor.
