Replacing Pump: Can i use metal hose clamps inside tank?

First time doing this and quite burnt out and frustrated as many of you were the first time replacing a fuel pump in these cars! LOL!

Info:
1991 RS 5.0 TBI Auto
Replacing TBI Fuel Pump with a TPI Pump (Upgrade for future mods and fix)

When I "finally" got the tank out and the pump unit out of the tank i noticed that the connecting rubber hose looked like a cross between jelly and charcoal. I replaced the hose with Fuel Injector hose from Peppy Boys. The only problem I’m running into now is the plastic hose clamps that came from the tank stock do not hold the new smaller outer diameter hose.

my question is can i use basic metal fuel injector hose clamps from the parts store? I’m afraid they will rust or break down in a constant gas environment. but i don’t really know. Is there any other options? Very tight zip ties?

Thanks everyone!
Cheaprs

P.S. The info on here about how to remove the tank was really spot on and a life saver of even more headaches!

got my tank out in a couple a hours. i used metal clamps in mine. i would think you would upgrade it right now. i went with a tpi pump instead of a tbi pump. as a matter of fact lots of people use metal clamps on theirs.

oh yeay. make sure the fuel injection hose you use is submersible hose. there is a difference.

WOW! Thanks for the quick reply! I did not check about the hose being submersible but this is really good info. I will go back tomorrow and check if it is submersible. You my friend just saved me an extra tank drop in a couple months if the hose does turn out to be non-submersible!

Once again thirdgen.org saves another Camaro from being mucked up and an owner from pulling their hair out!

yes you want submersible hose and I changed my fuel pump today actually I cut a hole in the back floorboard and made a cover for it for easy changing in the future. It went smoothly besides the fact that walbro made the adapter wrong so when I plugged it in the pump was pumping backwards haha.

If I still had a thirdgen I would cut a hole. My Vette pump is so easy to change as its right at the gas cap location. I would never want to drop exhausts and axles to get to a tank ever again.

Hell yeah I cut a hole didnt think twice about it. its resealed up, with a nice aluminum cover. covered by carpet. 15 mins to change a pump out now. not that i expect to do it anytime soon. high pressre EFI hose on the cut metal lines. no leaks all set ready to roll. These are 3rd gen camaro's thier is no big thing to cut a hole out of a part of the body that you never see

Another person who thinks that it's no big deal to molest and permanently damage a third gen just because he's too lazy and/or cheap to properly replace the fuel pump.

The third gen is the best version of the F-body ever made and there are less of them everyday because idiots abuse and wreck them. Someday these cars will have their due and be valued accordingly. When that day comes, some poor fool will be paying a body shop to repair the ugly hole in the floor board.

As well as all the rust on the floor boards and rear quarters and all the other problems that these cars are plagued with.

when my car is a show car someday and about to take first place..ill say oh wait did y'all know i made this nifty little hole to change the fuel pump and this nice aluminum plate to cover it up under my carpet that you would never be able to see unless I told you. Water wont hurt it unless im in a flood, which will damage the car regardless.

Re: Replacing Pump: Can i use metal hose clamps inside tank?

Thanks guys for your input. Triple checked the hose and was assured it was indeed submersible. I used FI hose clamps on the hose inside the tank and she purrs like a lion now! Last season i was having an odd upper RPM miss that seems to have gone away as well (must have been starving for fuel over 3500 rpm under load ) The only fubar is that now the gas gauge always reads full . Oh well I’m not pulling the whole darn thing again to get that to work! Ill "think" about fixing it over the winter. For now I will employ some simple subtraction and division to keep the car gassed up! LOL!

Thanks again everyone my vert is feeling much better I have a constant smile on my face!

see and if you cut the floorboard it'd take a mere 15 mins to get the pump out and replace the sending unit

Re: Replacing Pump: Can i use metal hose clamps inside tank?

i still cannot see cutting the floor to get the pump out. not that i did mine the right way i just did another. 3-1/2 hours total bustin butt. and it is all back in and working good. i suppose its all in the owner.

easy way--cut up the car

right way--take some more time

i am the piece of mind type that will not cut up anything on the body just to make it easy.

Re: Replacing Pump: Can i use metal hose clamps inside tank?

Yeah I understand what your saying. But manufacturers mess up making cars all the time. I wouldnt do this to anyones car unless they wanted it done. It doesnt bother me one bit. If you put that pump in and it doesnt work for some reason. Yeah of course you check before you put the rear end and exhaust back up. But if it goes out next week your like ahhhhh not again. You cant see it, no one will know its there unless you told them. water is not going to hurt it there

Re: Replacing Pump: Can i use metal hose clamps inside tank?

I had a car kill 3 pumps in 1 week. I was so glad it was a Honda with an access door. If I ever get another 3rd gen I would graft the hole/cover out of a Honda into the 3rdgen. That would look factory and I would be fine with that.
