FUEL PUMP!!!

Hello all!

I have been searching ALL MORNING trying to find posts about installing a TPI fuel pump in a TBI car. I have a few questions...

1. The electrical connector is different. Will the plug still fit? If not, what do you do? Get a TPI connector?

2. The fuel pump discharge is SMALLER on the TPI pump, correct?

3. Cutting the fuel lines... Compression unions? (yes, Im cutting the floor...) Or should I use rubber fuel line? Im VERY tempted to use high-pressure rubber fuel line. I dont trust compression unions...

This is not the first fuel pump replacement I have done in a Camaro. Just the first one where Im NOT dropping the tank. AND the first one where Im doing a fuel pump swap (TBI to TPI pump) I know you all want to flame but Im just looking for the best course of action before I get started...

Thanks in advance!

Re: FUEL PUMP!!!

THe pump I got had a wiring adapter. Although it was made wrong the wires were backwards on it. I cut the hole so when the car wouldnt start but I heard the pump pumping I was like oh its pumping backwards or its a POS. The wires were backwards. I used high pressure efi hose. Deffinately gotta use this on the two 3/8" lines as they are feed and return, on the other ones 5/16 is fine, Use high pressure if you can. Mine were cut and flared from a previous replacement so I didnt have to cut them while in the car. My hole is like 8x10 or so. I did this the other day. And remember your going to get a bunch of slack from people saying you are ruining a perfectly good car. I didnt see it that way. To each his own. Good luck. Oh yeah when you cut the flooring out, put some tape or something along the edge's of the metal so your hands dont get all cut up when your working on it.

Thanks for the reply. I really dont wanna cut the floor but so many other people have done it. If their cars havent rusted up, oh well. Plus Im still trying to get another engine built so I will end up having to pull the pump again anyway. I'm too old to be yanking tanks, unhooking exhaust systems, lowering diffs and and the other related crap to get the pump out. Plus my exhaust is welded up. No easy removal for that! LOL!

Thanks again dude!

Re: FUEL PUMP!!!

Are you changing your FI? TPI runs at a higher PSI (iirc) so a TPI pump would not work with TBI.

Everything I searched and read says that the regulator SHOULD keep the pressure down enough for the TBI. I remember doing a carb swap in a TPI equipped 86 Z28 years ago. TPI pump BUT a regulator was used. I dont remember what brand it was though...

Re: FUEL PUMP!!!

The fuel pump supplies volume, not PSI. The regulator determines the PSI. It will work fine I JUST DID THIS LAST FRIDAY. 100% no doubts. been done thousands of times on this site

I've searched. Just found a bunch of incomplete info so I figured I would ask. I will document everything and post it...

Re: FUEL PUMP!!!

Basically I took a chilton shop manual. placed it in the center lining up with the console. about 2.75 inches back from where it starts sloping down and traced the book there. cut it out and it was perfect. But thier is a thread on it somewhere. May be in general engine tech, tpi section or something.

Re: FUEL PUMP!!!

And.... IT'S DONE!

Boy was that a pain in the rear...

Turns out that the rubber hose between the pump and the metal line busted, effectively relieving all of the pressure going to the TBI unit. I replaced the pump anyway.

Forgot to take pics. Sorry. Now I have a nice access panel to replace the pump again if I have to. I did seal it up with RTV and I used rivets to hold it in place. Don't wanna have screws anywhere near the fuel tank.

UnderCover89TBI, thanks for your advice man! I really appreciate it.

Oh yeah... I flared the lines and used fuel injection hose AND clamps...

Thanks again guys!
