TBI 305 cold start problems
I just got my 88 T/A running and it'll only start from cold start with starting fluid and after that it'll run but backfire quite abit. It's wired up so that the fuel pump and cooling fan are ran CONSTANT while the ignition is on, could it be flooding it maybe?

Re: TBI 305 cold start problems
i bet you have a bad coolant temperature sensor. if it is reading wrong it could be making the injectors spray too much fuel into the engine, or not enough. are your injectors spraying?

Re: TBI 305 cold start problems
At first start it just has small drops of fuel, if any, but when I spray it with starting fluid it'll start up and run. If I turn it off while its warm it starts back up without hesitation.

Yes I can hear the fuel pump, its always on
And as far as the coolant temp sensor, its wired up to an aftermarket gauge, for some reason, but would that effect the ecm signal?

Re: TBI 305 cold start problems
the coolant temp sensor should not be wired to a gauge. the coolant temperature sender is located on the drivers cylinder head between cyl #1 and #3. that is what youd wire to a gauge. The coolant temp sensor is located on the intake manifold and this is for teh computer to read teh temperature of the engine and adjust the fuel to the engine. and the fuel pump could be going and not be suppling enough pressure so plese check fuel pressure as Thomas asked. Thanks.

Ok I'll check it when I get home, about what should the fuel pressure be? Sorry for the multiple questions but as you could tell I'm not that great with any fuel injection. Before this TA I've had nothing but carb'd cars so I'm not used to computer controlled engines

Re: TBI 305 cold start problems
stock tbi's are supposed to run between 9-13 psi. it can vary between there. another upgrade you wanna do at some point and time is get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator bump it up to 14 psi.

Re: TBI 305 cold start problems
The pressure is about 10psi, but I started it and unplugged the temp sensor and it actually ran alil better
Re: TBI 305 cold start problems
get a scanner on it when you have the sensor hooked up and see what it's reading for engine coolant temp. Sounds like the sensor is the problem, but that's only way to make sure without changing it. Also 10psi is a little low, should be closer to 13 than 9 (at least at idle/no load)
