TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

My car has sat for 5 or 6 years with old gas in it... I swapped a new engine in, and I added fresh fuel to it... I had the car running but the passenger side was spraying kinda bad.

Last week when I went to start it, no fuel for a couple starts, then finally fuel, and it started right up.

Today, went to start it again, no fuel... really pissed off now... and need a little help before I push this car over the hill.

Anyways, any thoughts on where I should start... I really hope I dont have to do a fuel pump.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

I'd try a bottle of fuel stablizer or water remover if you just added fresh fuel to the old fuel. Make sure your getting good fuel pressure, spark, ect.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

its seems as though it is either the fuel pump, or something electrical like ICM. The reason I think this is because the way it just all of a sudden started spraying again... like someone hit a switch. I realize I probably have dirty injectors as well, but I'm hoping a cleaner will take care of that once I figure out my fuel delivery problem.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

pretty much. but if it sat for that many years it might be a good idea to pull the tank, have it proffesionally cleaned, install a new sock filter and new pump.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

With it sitting for that long any dirt in the gas settled, so by putting new gas in you kicked it all up, which will clog the filter and fuel lines and injectors

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

Well, i pulled my fuel filter today, then I blew air through the lines. At that time, I turned my key to the ON position and the fuel pump was pumping fuel. So then I pulled the injectors, and there was a lot of crud in the bowl where the injectors sit. I soaked the injectors in cleaner then put everything back together. Cranked on the car for a while, until finally it started spitting fuel out. Guess I'm gonna need new injectors. Any recommendations for a stock replacement.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

so you've determind your pump is supplying some sort of volume of fuel, but not getting any fuel out of the injectors that you changed. leads me to believe that the injectors are not getting told to fire. Could be an ICM-ignition control module problem or a bad ground on the back of the heads. something of that nature.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

Well, the other night i was working on it outside with a worklight. I checked for a bad ground first. I saw where i grounded something to the distributor bolt, which is attached to my aluminum intake, so i'm thinkin,"thats gotta be it." It wasnt. So then i changed the ICM and still a no go... also in the process i managed to break one of the mounting tabs that houses the injectors, which now leaks fuel. So i'm back to square 1. I'm gonna try and return the injectors, then i'm gonna buy a used tbi unit that is running and go from there.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

well make sure to clean them up real good. odds are you wont be able to return them unless you "know" somebody. the ground are on the back of the heads. they may be all there. but may be slightly loose. you might wanna take them off and clean them up and then reinstall.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

I was working on it yesterday, and it does run on gas when i pour it in the tbi. I dont hear the fuel pump priming when i turn the key on, so I really think i need to replace the fuel pump now. Can someone post a picture of what the fuel pump relay looks like and how to test it? I've already checked underdash fuses. I just wanna make sure it is my fuel pump causing the problem and not something else. Ive got spark everywhere, just no fuel.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

the fuel pump relay is alittle black box located under the hood.most likely on firewall near 2 other relays which are the ac relay and efan relay.the fuel relay will have pink and black wires going to it.have an assistant turn the key on and listen for a click,if no click then you have a bad relay, make sure you do a wiggle test on the wires going to the fuel relay.and also make sure the ac is off so you dont mistake it for the fuel pump relay.also you could try swapping relays around since they all look alike, this should make the pump run if the relay is bad.if the relay works and pump dont run,try wiggle test on wires on the pump end of the circuit.also if you reverse the wires polarity the turn the pump backwards for a couple of seconds this could free up the pump that may have seized.it actually worked for me once.or just replace the pump if switching relays around doesnt work.goodluck!hope this helps.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

Alright... im ready to give up... I've spent hundreds of dollars and still cant get it to run, but i do have it narrowed down and hopefully you guys can help.

I got spark and it runs when i put gas in the tbi.

I replaced the fuel pump... i can hear the fuel pump running now and i got pressure in the tank, but my fuel injectors are not firing. I put a test light on the injectors; i got power to one side of each injector, but nothing on the other side... from my understanding it should be pulsing on/off. I replaced the ICM also... but how do i test to make sure that is good, or do you guys think i have other issues?

You can take the ICM itself off and take it to autozone and they will test for free. Have you checked the fuel pressure just to verify that your lines arent clogged and your getting good pressure?

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

Ok, im still working on this. This is what I did... I didnt have a oil pressure switch hooked up, and i was reading that this would cause the ecm to shut down the fuel pump. So, I drained my oil, which was very watery, no viscosity at all and smelled of fuel; then I screwed in my oil pressure switch from my original engine, then filled it back up with oil. Hooked the battery back up, turned the key, fuel pump primed, cranked it and the injectors sprayed and then it started right up. It ran for about 20 seconds really rough, then it stalled out and would not start up again. When I would crank it, there was smoke coming from the oil cap opening; i had the oil cap off. Anyone wanna take a stab at my issues now? I dont wanna throw any more money at this car.

Re: TBI Not getting any fuel... Help

loose wire between battery and fuel pump relay... it was giving me intermittent power to the relay, which threw me through a loop... always something stupid... as soon as i saw it, I knew that was the problem, just cant believe something so little kept me from having this running for the past 8 months
