What do you think of this camshaft idea?
I am building a flat tappet TBI motor for a high torque/mileage application but I still enjoy stomping on it once in while. It is a 350 with a set of ported 193 heads on it in keeping with the high torque/mileage theme.
Since it is also a budget project I was going to run the Summit 204/214 camshaft and here is where my thoughts digress. It looks like the exhaust ports can evac way more than the intakes can inhale on these heads so I was thinking of running 1.6 rockers on the intake and 1.5 on the exhaust. Then I would use the crane fast bleed down lifters to help keep the idle and low speed duration way down so the computer doesnt get confused and the mileage and torque stays very high.
Thoughts?
Thanks
Roy

If your goal is high torque and mileage then just leave the cam alone. All your doing is a basic rebuild with a Edelbrock (old tech) cam. Is the block a roller cam block? If so, why not use a roller cam?

The block is not a roller cam block, otherwise I would be using one.

Pretty sounding setup but i think i would run 1.6rr's for exh and intake,I would think about dropping a carb intake or holley projection tbi intake manifold on it to. Thread Starter

Re: What do you think of this camshaft idea?
My basic idea here is to take a camshaft that we know works for this application and make it better on the top end with the rockers and better on the bottom end with the bleed down lifters.
The idea is to build some performance into it while retaining the high torque and mileage, not just do a stock rebuild, that is why I am going to change the camshaft.
The motor will have 9.8 to 1 compression, ported heads, long tube headers with a 3" exhaust, a free flowing cold air intake, and the ultimate TBI mods.
I also have everything I will need to be able to tune it.
It will be in a 3500 lb car and I need the torque in the 2-2500 range for towing purposes.

Personally I wouldnt worry about the fast bleed lifters or 1.6 rockers since you are on a budget. I am running that cam in my truck and it is an old design made for towing, now everyone copies it. I also ran that grind in a camaro when I was in high school. It is a good solid cam the way it is. I doubt you would get much extra with the mods but you can try it out. I haven't done much towing in my truck but I am looking forward to seeing how she handles it. Last big tow was 200 miles with 8k lbs on the 250k stocker and she was a total dog.
