Hello all

I have a 91 RS TBI Auto with some issues I can't exactly figure out so I thought Id ask for help.

1. Every time I step on the gas pedal, an Up Shift light illuminates on my dash. Im completely baffled by it. It is only on as long as Im on the pedal no matter how light or how heavy.

2. Yesterday, my RS woudlnt turn over. Later it started to. Minutes later it cranked but wouldnt start. Then it would only start as long as I pumped the gas pedal. If I wasnt on the pedal, it would die out, even while on the highway. It stalled 3 times while driving because I let off the gas during a 40 mile trip. It also smelled REALLY BAD on start up, not like the normal exhaust smell when it was running fine.

3. This morning, there was a strong smell of gas when I went out to inspect the spark plugs and wires, so I pulled the air filter off and found gas flowing out of the driver side injector and a few drips coming from the passenger side injector. The fuel had been dripping long enough to spill all over the intake manifold and eat away at the paint.

4. When Im driving on the highway, this RS is constantly shifting in and out of top gear when driving in OD, but I have no problems when driving in normal D. If I had to take a guess, Id say the governor on the trans needs adjusting...

Any help would very much appreciated! I love this car and would like to get it in top shape as best I can. Just replaced the aftermarket steering wheel the previous owner installed with an OEM unit.

 

1. May be under a load, due to injector problem, may have problem with prom, ecm, or grounds.
2. (A) won't turn over, check battery voltage, do voltage drop test, ground at block to center of negative battery post. Positive test center of battery positive to starter main cable. Read voltage when cranking.
2. (B) your discribing it flood, hold gas pedal to floor, goes into clear flood mode, does it start then?
3. Unplug injectors, crank over, do the injector leak or drip?
4. Throttle, load, brake switch controls, speed, is what controls tcc lockup

Do first 1, 2a, 2b, 3 may correct #4

1. Load can make the Shift Up light come on? It does only come on when the engine is under load(doesn't when I turn on the AC though)

2. (A)I will check the cable connections and starter cable
2. (B) yes, it will only start with the pedal pressed to the floor. Takes 5-10 seconds but it will eventually start

3. Will check that and report back

4. Throttle, load, brake, and speed switches? What is TCC? Torque Converter Clutch?

 

On the upshift light, if you have the 700r4, you won't have a shift light only the manuel transmission will have a shift light. If it is on the prom, is wrong, wire problems computer problems.

Sounds like the injectors are leaking fuel, pull oil dipstick and check level, feel it, smell the oil. If it smells like gas or feels thinned out dont keep driving the car. Fix the injectors and change the oil now!

If you don't have a volt meter, stand in the front side of the car, turn on the headllights and have someone start the car 6 or 8 times watch the headlights then cautiously touch things. Whats hot will have a voltage loss. Note if the lights stay bright, dim, go out?

 

for the upshift light pull the gauges and remove the bulb from the upshift pocket. i put one in for the heck of it and the upshift light came on the way you are describing.
