89 TBI Stalls

So I have an 89 TBI 305 camaro. I put an aftermarket Holley intake manifold and TBI (670CFM) and it had been running great for years.

Now recently I have been having the following issues.

1) Stalls while idling in traffic. It does restart but seems like its having issues idling correctly.

2) When its below freezing in the mornings the car starts but then idles erratically and dies. If you restart it about 20 times it will finally "warm" up just enough to finally do the pre-heat cycle idling at 1500 RPM until it warms up and idling down to 750 RPM.

3) Stopped at the store for about 20 minutes the other day and when I came back out to start it up it was idling erratically and would die as soon as you put it in gear and tried to give it gas. Eventually let it cool down for about an hour and then it started right up like nothing happened.

So far I have changed: IAC, TPS, CTS, MAP, Distributor, Coil, Alternator, Battery, checked plugs and more.

So if anyone's got some ideas i'm all game at this point as the problem continues to allude me.

Do you have the egr valve on or blocked off? If the egr is opening at idle the engine will stall or run rough, disable it by plugging the vacuum hose & drive it for a couple days. The egr solenoid might be going bad.

Yeah I have the EGR valve on and made sure the valve isn't plugged or anything like that. Another thing that seems like is going on is a harsh gas smell coming from the engine compartment.

I will try disabling the EGR and see what happens.

Thanks

Re: 89 TBI Stalls

So I took the vacuum line off the EGR and the car appeared to be doing much better for about a week.

Then the other day it was the first warm day of spring and my car started stalling. It got so bad that while I was driving down the road the car suddenly started surging and eventually cut out. At this point I tried restarting the car and it would for about 2 seconds and then would die. After letting it "cool" down for several hours the car eventually ran "ok" to get home.

I noticed that when I turned the key to prime the pump that it sounded weird like it was overheated or something. Normally it primes and has a constant noise. But when the car wouldn't stay running the pump sounded like it was winding down while priming.

Could my fuel pump be intermittently going out or possibly getting hot?

Re: 89 TBI Stalls

Nope. Took it to three different mechanics and still cant find anything wrong with it. So I parked it and driving a Saab now. Stupid cheap 80's GM garbage! I'm ready for a motor swap... anyone in Oregon that's outside of DEQ I can register too?
