Crossfire Turbo
Crossfire Turbo
Hey guys, long time reader, don't post too often. I have been out of the hobby car game for a few years due to buying a new house, having a son etc. I have owned several Third Gens in the past. 1983 LG4 Trans Am, 1984 L69 5 speed Recaro T/A and a 1987 L98 IROC. I have also owned a 1984 Corvette, which I had to sell to get a downpayment for my rental property I maintain.
Now I am planning to be back into the Cpcar game again starting This summer. I have two 1984 Corvettes(one is a parts car, written off, good drivetrain/interior etc. Bought them as a set. I am also looking for an 82-83 Crossfire F-body. First I have a few questions in general.
I have a tone of books on F-bodies, and have scanned the Internet thouroghly trying to find a definitive answer. Did they make any Crossfire Cars with a manual transmission? I have heard that a few 82s made it out with both LU5 and the 4 speed, I have also heard that a few 83 LU5s made it out with manual trannys. Has anyone here seen one, or can confirm they exist?
Next, my Corvette build will be a 383, budget build. Ported aluminum L98 heads, nice 0-5500rpm range torque cam, and either a Renegade Manifold, as the two cars I bought came with one still ine the box. Hoping for 300-330rwhp and400ish rwtq.
Onto the Camaro or Firebird, whichever it mayy be. For this, I want to do something that I have not seen to much of. A twin turbo 305 utilizing the crossfire induction system. I spoke to the guys at DCS, and they don't think their Renegade would handle boost well. So I may use a ported Stocker. Or, I have an idea on building a custom manifold. I work as an aircraft mechanic, 4 on 4 off, and on my days off, I work casual part time at a local Corvette performance shop, which gives me access to lots of tools to play with. More on my plans for a custom manifold in another thread.
For the turbo build, I'm thinking of running the 305, re-built bottom end. For heads I will use a set of L98 aluminum heads, can be had for $300-$600 on Kijiji. Camshaft will be conservative, I'll have something custom ground once I work out the numbers. Likely I will use a ported stock intake, with bored out Throttle Bodies and larger injectors. I haven't decided what to go with for turbos yet, but I am thinking T3/T4 hybrids, running about 10 pounds of boost. I'll be looking for about 9.0:1 compression, which I know might sound a little high, but I find with aluminum heads and conservative ignition timing this is ideal for low-medium boost, which I would classify my 10psi at. The higher compression gives it more get up and go while your not driving hard, also I find with higher compression ratios I get turbos spoiling a little faster.
I am thinking I'd running one turbo to each TB. I will be using an air to air intercoolers. Power wise I really don't know what to expect. If I can dial the dinosaur ECM in I'm thinking at 10psi 280-300rwhp around 5000-5300rpm could be possible. With the high stroke to bore ratio of the 305, I am thinking 400+rwtq could be possible.
I'm curious as to whether anybody has any info/advice, has done this before with a crossfire car. I know of Joby, I believe he ran a supercharger on a crossfire Vette if I'm not mistaken? Did he have to custom fab TB boxes to seal them or can they be ordered from somewhere?
Hoping to hear from you crossfire guys.

Re: Crossfire Turbo
As far as I know, the only manual tranny cfi cars are the 84 vettes.
As far as boasting a cfi you'll have to make a sealed box over the tbi units. You'll need a different ecm that you can program.

Re: Crossfire Turbo
Yea I have a few options to go with for the ECM, I may have a stand alone ECM powering a possible third and fourth injector should I decide the raise the boost, lords custom stuff. I have a pretty good idea of what I am going to do, just wondering if anyone else has boosted the crossfire cars?
