fuel sending unit problem
fuel sending unit problem
hi everyone. I have a 89 firebird that I'm in the process of restoring. But kinda ran into a problem. The previous owner had cut an access panel to get to the fuel pump but for some reason he cut the fuel sending unit lines. So I just bought a hole new pump and sending unit. But the lines run under the car an he only has three hooked up an one blocked off just hanging. Plz help any ideas? V6 btw

Re: fuel sending unit problem
Welcome to TGO, note that we have a V6 board here. Hopefully a TBI mod sees this post and moves it. None of the V6 3rd gens came with a TBI set up. If there is one on there someone swapped it on.
Back to the issue at hand. You are likely going to need to trace some fuel lines. That is the ones that run from the front to the rear of the car. Blowing compressed air (at about 5psi), through a line will show where the other end goes.
Starting with the sending unit, the hardline with the Saginaw fitting on the end is the high pressure feed to the filter and on to the engine. Can't miss this one.
The line that goes all of the way to the bottom of the tank and supports the fuel pump is the return line from the engine. This and the high pressure feed line are the ones that go from the frame rail to the engine under the hood.
On the sender, there is a line that has the roll-over valve on it. Looks like a protrusion into the tank. This line runs up to the front of the car and goes to the charcoal canister (CCP). Note that if you blow through this line on the sender that there is a restriction in it.
Dead giveaway that it is for the CCP system.
Note that it is easy to swap the CCP & return lines at the tank to hose connections. Do this and the charcoal canister will fill with fuel and pour out the vent.
Last line on the sender appears to be open to the top of the tank. This line goes to the vent valve located above the rear axle on the drivers side. Commonly called the mushroom valve.
