I need help with my 83 Camaro

Hi, my name is Jake, I own a 83 z28 Camaro with cross-fire injection. The motor started to cut out. Not right away though. If you start it runs good for a couple minutes. Then it starts acting up, Cutting out with any pressure to the throttle. If you shut it off and start it again it will be fine for about a minute then cut out. The injectors look like they are giving enough fuel. I need help. Thanks.

Hey, Jake.

When you say "cut out" do you mean that the engine literally does not detonate, or does the idle just get rough?

Have you checked your: vacuum lines, spark plugs, plug wires, and distributor?

It literally does not detonate. Plugs are good, wires are all properly and are newer. Put a new Ignition module on it and a new coil. The main vacuum lines are good. It's real confusing.

That is confusing. I guess that leaves the fuel system, like RS-CHevy-SS said, check out the fuel pressure

Hey Jake, how long have you had your car? Dis she come with the cross fire already on and hooked up? I too have an 83 CFI car. However, the CFI is not on there. People that had her before me put a carb on. I'm guessing they wanted more horsepower. I was curious to see how much of a pain it is gonna be to take her back to the CFI. Good luck with your cutting out problem!!

Most of the cfi's have problems so people swap them out to a carburetor. It could be that they wanted more power though. Thanks. I changed the plug wires and the coil and checked all the plugs.

No change. Does not read on the timing light. So everyone thinks it is the timing chain. We've used multiple timing lights and different people have tried. It does have t-tops. They leak a little but they are nice when it's hot outside. The car is white. I used to have cragar drag stars on it but I swapped it over to American racing outlaw II's.

Wow!!!! We basically have the same car!! Mine is also white with t tops!! I, however don't know if mine leak. Haven't had her in the rain yet. I try to keep from it. Where are you from? I see a few other third gens around, but all of them are newer than mine. There are no other early third gens around!! They are pretty hard to come by. There is somethin about the early ones that i just love!!

I'm from Iowa. A thing that I love about the early third gen's is the interior. My valve cover leaks and so does my transmission seal. I plan on cleaning the hole motor and redoing all the gaskets while we have it off the mounts so I am going to take it out all the way.

That's cool. We aren't too far then!! Ya, mine leaks as well!! We are gonna rebuild the transmission this fall, and put a 327 motor in. Just cause we have one layin around that we aren't using!! ha ha!! I love our interiorr too!! Do you have the light sand gray interior? That's what mine is, and all of mine has to e special ordered because its so rare!! I think thats pretty cool!! That color was only made from 82-84 I believe!! Another thing I love is the working air vents in the hood!! We are trying to figure out how to make mine work without the Crossfire hooked up!! I think we are getting close!!! Oh, and the fiberglass hood is another special detail about our cars!! Its great to meet someone with the same car as me!! woohoo!! ha ha!!

I too was going to make my crossfire hood functional (w/out having the cfi system on the engine) But then after the high-rise intake, etc etc the fiberglass hood wouldn't shut (lol). BUT before realizing that we did have an idea that a pressure switch (similar to what operates the brakes) mounted behind the throttle could work. Having it set to where the flaps opened at WOT or near to WOT.

I do have that color of interior. It needs cleaned up. Could use new carpet. The t-tops used to leak real bad. There is green moss or mold or something on the rear passenger floor board and a small patch on that seat too. But no tears in them. My hood was probably like that. But some dipshits before me got into a wreck with it. It could use a new bumper but having a unibody sucks. Gotta buy the whole fenders and the bumper. Anyways. It has a different hood (which is dented). They got the bumper fixed. It doesn't have the badge. And it needs paint.

Re: I need help with my 83 Camaro

Hey everyone. I got the front of the motor taken apart. The seal on the harmonic balancer broke and the outter part shifted inward so there was really no way to check the timing which is why we couldn't. We're going to take out the motor replace all the gaskets and the front transmission seal. I'm going to paint the block as well. I'm getting rid of that smog pump thing. I'm going to upgrade to headers as well.

Red Leader, do you still have the CFI components? We still have the little motor that operated the vents, so we are gonna get a vacuum operated electronic switch and hook it up to a ported slot on the carb. So it will basically do the same thing, but not have to have the throttle wide open for the vents to open!! I am going to order the switch tommorow!!

If you are thinking of putting the CFI back on I suggest not to. A lot of people have problems with it.

Jake, how do you like yours? I have tossed it around, but I think I will just leave the carb on. I think I will hold on to the CFI parts, just because thats what my car came with out of the factory.

We're switching to a carb. I will keep all the components though because that's how it came from the factory. It's easier to work on and it makes the motor look a hell of a lot better with a chrome air cleaner. It's okay I guess but I've heard stories from lots of guys how one injector goes out. I mean it would make it worth more later in life if you plan on keeping it.

Oh, I am definately keepin her!! She is my baby!! I think the value in our cars will only go up in price over the years. Last year when we were driving my husbands 68, a guy offered him $40,000. He said no, of course!! He built her from the ground up.

I won't sell my other one. I'm not sure out the one with CFI. The carbureted one I am currently building the white one is just a beater in the mean time.

If you still have that little motor, then you should be good to go!! Just get a VOES(vacuum operated electronic switch) We are getting one that operates at 6 of mercury. Getting it from NAPA. Should be here sometime this week!!

Oh, the reason I never figured it out is because my engine is too tall to fit under the stock hood lol. but thanks!

Mine used to do the same thing. '83 Z-28 with CFI. It would cut out when coasting.(Like going down a hill.) My brother set the idle alittle higher and it fixed the issue.

Invest a little time and effort and you can have that CFI purring like a kitten.

I'd like it better without all the electronic bullshit.

Whatever makes you happy. But it is a simple system and it is unique to see one that actually runs good. Good luck with it. At least you are retaining the parts just in case.

Some people don't wanna buy them because they don't work good most of the time. Other people like them and try to get them in top condition. I prefer a carburetor.
