So in short, Im working on a 91 RS with the TBI 305. Will be installing a steel circle track fuel cell in at some point. Since we are keeping the TBI, that gives me alittle bit of an issue. I dont see how I could safely and securely use a stock intank fuel pump with the fuel cell. So I have to figure something out. Here is my options I believe

1. Install an extra port into the fuel cell for a return (comes with only 2, vent and supply), run an external pump and let the TBI pressure regulator control it. Seems the best way to do it, but Im not sure what all will be required to install a new port.

2. Does anyone make a returnless pump that would work externally? Would prevent me from having to put another port in the fuel cell.

I made some wrong assumptions on the fuel cell design that was making it more complicated in my mind. It seems like I just need to add a simple return line by installing another bulkhead connector into the cell.

 

The May 2015 issue of Car Craft had an article where a TBI unit was installed on a 77 Corvette. They used an external fuel pump from a "late 80s early 90s Ford F-250 with a throttle body fed 7.5L"

Going to look into this as an option. Worked good for them, might be a good cheap alternative.

 

Interesting. I wonder how much noise that external pump may / may not make?

 

Not sure. If I go this route I will document it on here. Noise isnt a concern for me, but I could see where it would be for some others.

 

Starting on this project. Before I jump in, anybody have any other thoughts on what pump to run?

I have a 12 gallon cell. Planning on cutting the rear trunk area out and mounting it between the rear rails. Ive got that part figured out mostly. Just the pump and return line is all that Im not certain on.

But it mentions min pressure 70 psi, max at 95. Seems way too high for the regulator on the tbi unit doesn't it?

E8049 is a good external TBI pump.

 

That is the one some people on pirate4x4 have had good luck with. Im leaning towards it. Good to know someone on here has had luck with it.

Hope to start cutting in 2 weeks with the cell in and back to running by march.

 

Actually it is E8094, I got the last numbers transposed, very sorry if that caused any confusion. This is the pump I purchased and used as an external feed from a stock non-efi tank to a TBI conversion. Two years, zero problems. I have it on a rubber isolator and can't hear it inside at all.

Got the trunk pan cut out and the used tank basket welded in. Going to order the pump in the next week if anyone has any further comments or suggestions on which pump to run.

 

Just to confirm, for anyone using the airtex E8094 pump, the OUTLET is the side with the wiring connection right? No markings on the pump or anything the pump comes with. Found one thread on google about someone having the same issue, and the picture airtex sent him appears to show that the outlet is the wiring side.

You have it correct. Don't know why they don't bother to mark that. And it's very hard to see the polarity markings for the wires, too!

I actually have it backwards right now on the car. Just wired and mounted, not connected. Mounted it vertical behind the driver's rear seat metal right near the trans tunnel. I had to order some parts. Glad I now know I should flip it before I finish it up! It took some hard looking to find the + / -!

 

Thanks for the help 357L98. Got it all plumbed and fired up. Loud little sucker (pump) but that's actually nice. Can tell if its running or not. Cant hear it over the open exhaust anyways.

Sure, I'd like to see how you mounted it. I put mine on a rubber isolator bracket, and can hardly hear it.

 

I'll post a pic later this week then. Just sheet metal screws directly mounted to the area behind the driver's rear seat near the trans tunnel. The sheet metal may be amplifying the sound.

 

Yep, if you have one of those pumps touching anything but rubber, it will be noisy!
