Why would you carb a 4.8? Why wouldn't you stick with the fuel injection?
Well, seeing as I'm still new at the whole engine swap thing, the idea of splicing into the current harness to connect the efi seems a little intimidating to me. Theres so much to mess up. Plus, by going carb, i could get the engine up and running in the car faster, because it eliminates all the wiring for the rngine, minus ignition but the carb kit comes with a msd box already. Eventually I would probably swap back but for the time being, I'd rather play it safe and do something that makes more sense to me. Thanks!

Re: insurance on tbi for first car?

sorry for the long wait, ive had ap testing and finals preparation these past few weeks. thanks for the replies. i was just accepted into a tech school in my county for my junior year next year, and will be going every other day, all day long. this gives me an opportunity to get a project car to work on even during the school year, because getting a roller will enable me to follow the curriculum given to us. throughout the year, theyll be teaching me how to rebuild, service, change parts, etc on engines, how to change springs, minor wiring, the whole 9 yards. im thinking of getting a summer job to add to what i have saved up all ready, and get a roller firebird or camaro ( definatley a 3rd gen) and then get either a 4.8 lr4, or a 5.3 lm7 and swap that in and make a track/ autocross car for taking to the racetracks they have near my area. im still leaning towards a carb swap as well as it wont be a daily, and i dont need any interior wiring with the exception of the gauge cluster. also, ive heard that going carb will make more peak power. is this true? thanks everyone

i have a 1992 rs and im paying 87 a month. i tried to get classic insurance but found out i need to keep it in a garage, which i dont have (and i didnt want to lie and say i did lol). liberty mutual wouldnt even give me a policy because its over 20 years old. ended up with geico for 87 a month with 1 accident and 1 ticket i think... which is a great policy

RS vs Z28 can make a huge difference in insurance even if they both have the 305. When I was shopping for my first Camaro when I was 18 every time I got a quote for a Z28 it was prohibitive so I got a 305 RS and it was much cheaper.

Is the Z/28 option coded into the VIN number?

If not...you could lower your rates by forgetting to mention that particular option.

The down side is that when you make a claim, they're going to **** 'n' moan about paying full "Z/28" repair/replacement prices.

Re: insurance on tbi for first car?

Yeah, all an insurance company usually asks for is a VIN#, which will tell them its a V8 camaro coupe.

For comparison's sake my (in-no-way-stock)Z28 was insured for $261 every 6 months, and I'm 26 yrs old. I recently took it off since she's gonna be garage bound for the next 6 months due to some repairs but yeah.

If you're looking for "full coverage" insurance on your first car, and you wish for that first car to be a 30+ yr old vehicle you're going to pay alot. If you just go with liability coverage you can make it manageable.

No, but the engine is. For example the 90-92 cars, 8th VIN digit a F or 8 = LB9 or L98 = "High performance" = high insurance

8th digit a E or T = L03 or LH0 = not "high performance" = cheaper insurance.

that makes sense. would a firebird formula be considered the high performance one? the one i saw had a tpi, and i think thats the lb9 but im not positive. theres an 88 formula for sale that needs a little work, but is in over all decent condition for about 2 grand, maybe even less.
