I'll tell you what is in your best interest, what you should do and what you will end up doing.
Your best interest would be to spend the $300 for the equipment and burn your own eproms. It's REALLY easy, just takes a while to learn and it's SO VERY VERY worth it. Especially if you ever want to play with more advanced EFI systems.
You should call up the speed shops in your area. Look in the phone book or search the web for phone numbers. I like google, it turns up the most speed shops in the area. You'll want to talk to somebody that has tuned eproms for the 7747 ecm (87-91 trucks). The 8746 is the same thing basically and if they tune the 7747 they'll have no trouble working with the 8746. Another thing to look for is a dyno. The best engine tuners use a dyno of some sorts. Correctin, not the best engine tuners, just the guys with the most experience and proof of performance. I know MANY a guys that are expert tuners but they don't have a dyno.
What you will probably end up doing is either buying some eprom from some nobody OR going with a carb. This always happens and I think in some respects it's the best choice UNLESS you do your own eprom tuning!!!
Another idea is to get a g-tech and run your car and play with your base timing and fuel pressure. This is the only way to tune TBI without touching the eprom. For a mild 305 TBI the fuel pressure tuning can make huge differences. Just ask any of the guys on this board if they've done the adjustable fuel pressure regulator, they'll all say it was the single best thing they've ever done for the price (free).
Ask a carb guy if he can tune his carb without using jets and all those other parts/screws. He'll say, "Hell no!" and I do the same thing. Anybody that thinks they don't need to tune fuel pressure is dumb and doesn't deserve to drive a modern muscle car.
Everybody hear me?!?!?! I said you're a MORON if you've done anything to your TBI and haven't adjusted the fuel pressure accordingly!!!
How do you think NJSpeeder ran his 14.2's and camaroracer1992 ran his 13.2's with N2o! Ask Fastbroker, ask Randy, ask me, ask the guys on the diy-efi board, like Grumpy! All will say the same thing. Tune your fuel pressure for the best mph in the 1/4.
An eprom is only really worth the money if you've done or are planning on doing some heavy mods and keeping with the GM ecm.
