Whats the Easiest way to get rid of smog crap?

I own a 85 Z28 w/ a 305 TBI..

Someone told me that the easiest thing to do is to get a new intake, that doesnt have to be expensive and then just start taking off the smog (emissions) crap. I am not sure if thats true or not, But I remember reading things before that people have taken all that stuff off and that had other probs like poor idleing and whatnot.. Does anyone know if my idea will work.. Or is there something that you already know would work?

Thanks,
John

There's a difference between taking off the egr or other systems, or just taking the smog equipment out. You can take the smog pump and related system out without throwing any codes, or affecting any drivablility. The main advantage is simply engine-bay cleanup. The only thing I did to be on the safe side was 6 months later I got a new cat w/ no air fitting. The poor idling, etc kinda stuff you might have heard about: sounds like they were talking about the egr. I'm not kowledgable on egr removal but I've heard there's a bit more work to be done than with the smog stuff. I hope that helps for at least 1/2 your question.

BTW- if you decide to go w/ removing the smog stuff, its very straight-forward and easy

EGR removal is very easy and only requires you block off the opening on your intake manifold - it should not cause any idling problems. It will set a code 32 cruising on the highway, though... search old posts for good expl.s of what this means as far as knock/combustion chamber temp., when EG is supposed to be released... Smog pump (AIR system) removal takes a little more work. Use that "search" button and you'll find at least 10 threads that already cover all this.

I don't know about the belt length for the 3-pulley set, I have the 2 pulleys. The P/N is basically just the belt length in inches, so just take some twine and thread it along where the belt will go and mark it off and measure it. Won't take you but 2 minutes...

if your using underdrive pulleys its 93.5 inches. I jsut did it 2 weeks ago. its 2 inches longer than what you had.

And BTW, either pinch or cap, clog, crimp shut or plug that tube going to the cat after you remove the pump and box. I rigged a temp cap using a 2 liter bottle cap, duct tape, and zip ties. Dont ask, i was in a bad mood.

What will that do?

What will pluggin up that hole do? I have had mine unhooked for like a year now. It has just been a gaping hole. Also what do I do with those 2 sensors in the, i guess, the router valve or whatever it is? Do I just block them off? Will I get a code come down for an open loop or anything?

I also just got done doing a smog removal. I used pipe end caps on my air tubes off the headers and cats. I plan on getting rid of the tubing off the cats, but I just wasn't in the mood to jack up the car at the time. The dang smog pump bottom bolt stripped out, but a quick burn with the torch took care of the bracket pretty quickly.
