why does car take so long to start?

when i firtst start my car in the morning it takes a while for it to start up after cranking. i have heard from other people on the board that it has something to do with the fuel pump and the oil pump... the fuel pump wont turn on until the oil system gets presure? is this true? i have also heard that on tbi cars the oil pump uses the fuel pumps relay as a back up... any clarification on this will help!! thanks alot!!

If it's just cranking over and over then try adjusting your base timing. Too much advance will make for a hard start and lost of cranking. The fuel pump oil pressure thing is ignored when first starting the car. The oil pressure switch is bypassed so the car will start but then it's directed through the oil pressure switch in a few seconds (not sure about that). Anyways, just turn your key to the on position and listen for the fuel pump. It should prime and start running for a few seconds to build pressure in the line even though no oil pressure is present!
Definatly give it a good tune up. Lots of mines = timing chain stretch and old plugs. I also recommend (if engine is hard just to turn over) that you replace the wires going to the starter solinoid from the battery. Sometimes these wires can get burnt from being so close to the exhaust.
