What is the best cam and how hard are they to swap?
My problems are starting to arise as I definetly have a bad lifter, and have what looks to be a bad intake manifold gasket, as oil is leaking from it. So while I have the intake off and lifters out, I figure it's a good time to replace the cam. Now I know every bodies going to tell me LT1, which I know would be most cost efficient, but what are other good options? Is swapping the cam a PITA? Can it be done without lifting the engine? Thanks
well, if ya wanna stay with roller, and not go flat tappet (like a goo dportion of aftermarket cams are), then your $ saving cams are limited. LT1 cams are recommended as they are readily available (http://web.camaross.com/cgi-bin/foru...=10&LastLogin= or http://www.ebaymotors.com), they can be piced up cheap (I got mine LT1 cam for $35 shipped including springs, retainers, and locks), they are a good improvement over peanut cam, and not too much lift fer the 305. I personly feel that spending any decent amount of cash on a cam fer a 305 (unless yuo truely are planning on building it up for some reason...) is pointless. I guess the LT4/LT4 HOT cams are also options. go to crane cams, and comp cams web sites maybe for alternatives.... Just my $0.02. hope it helps!
