92 RS TBI - a few questions
92 RS TBI - a few questions
Hey whats up.
This guy is selling his 92 Camaro RS with 110k miles on it. I test drove it today and it seemed to drive pretty well, didn't veer off to any one side and seemed to break well. Ok so heres whats wrong with the car... the body is a mess because the guy got into a fight with someone and they keyed up most of the car. It needs a new hood because someone tried to put an aftermarket on that is just a mess and cracked + does not stay open. The windshield is cracked (not severely but enough to where a cop can give u a ticket if he notices). I think thats about it. After driving it for about 30 minutes and pounding it pretty good I could hear a ticking sound coming from under the car (around the cat area?) not really really loud but still noticeable. It's a ticking thats like the sound my firebird made when it was low on oil is the only when i can put it into words. Any speculation as to what that could be? The car does not leak anything (oil/antifreeze/power stearing fluid) from what I could tell & the guy has an $650 radio in it and also a 12 disc cd changer, both pioneer, and a remote start (thats the only way the car starts because the key is scratched on the chip) thats what the guy said. it also has an alarm. Ok so the question is about how much would i expect to pay to have the car sanded down (i assume this is what is needed when someone keys the car) and paint? how much for a windshield? He's asking $2200 for the car... i told him i'd take it for $2000 and he said OK... is this a good price? i have a couple days before he can find the title and all that so I'm wondering if anyone could comment. Thanks in advance.

Hell no. That car sounds like a piece of ****, seriously.
I got my old '92 RS for $3000. It had 75,000 miles on it, was never beaten on, bone stock, and had a NEW PAINT JOB.
LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. Seriously, save yourself the time and/or trouble. If you're willing, you can find some decent thirdgen Z's for around $4,000.

Ticking sound?
Is this ticking sound when it is running or not? If it is while it is running; it could possibly be pinging.
Sounds pretty messed up if you ask me. A new paint job could cost you quite a bit if you have them do all the body work. You might get away with sanding the car yourself and having a decent paint job for around 4-500 dollars. Expect to pay more for bodywork.
Expect to pay a lot of money to have the ignition system redone too. A stereo is definitely not the reason to buy the car.
I think you'll save yourself a lot of pain by not buying the car. You'll inherit all the problems from a truly neglected car.
If you really want this car, expect to pay quite a bit of money to get the car to look showroom nice.
Bodywork is not cheap. I have a chip in my hood from a friendly semi that is going to cost me about $200 to fix. And this is a chip that is about 1/4". I need to have the hood repainted after it is fixed. I am looking into an alternative now.
Remember it is your money and your choice. After you put all this money into getting the body in shape, will the engine still work?
I'd find someone that is a good mechanic to give you a second opinion before you sink your money into a pit.
Just my opinion.

It's rather easy to figure out what you should pay. Just take an average blue book value, compare it to similar cars at dealers in the area/state/country. Then look at what it will cost in parts AND labor to get the car to the same condition as the dealer cars. Once you've figured the cost of repairs, paint, tune up, tires, Etc. you'll have a price to offer. Make it clear to him that is how you came up with the price. I got my car from $4800 to $3750 3 years ago. It had SLP stainless exhaust system, brand new paint, new wheels and drove very well. I saw potential and the TPI was just something I couldn't and can't afford, so I bought it, engine swap 2.5 years later and it's a beast. Oh yeah, tranny was rebuilt when it got an SLP shift kit so I figured the price was about right. It even had brand new brakes. Shop around, don't get stuck on one car unless it comes with a 400 small block and a m22 tranny for under $2000
. I can't believe I passed up that deal on a 76 vette
, had too much body work required but heck, for that price I could have parted it out
, oh well.

, oh well. i only paid 2000$ for my 88 SC with 90k miles, good paint, no broken windshield, runs good, new tires, all kinds of new ****, plus he gave me a record of everything ever done to the car and all reciets...and i know my car was taken decent care of because my neighbors had it since it was new so...i think you can find a better deal honestly...i paid that much for my car and its in really good shape cept my hatch is fading but thats it....

well i figure to replace the windshield is only like $150 and I see hoods around $150. If i take it to maaco and have them fix the body and paint it that'll be another $500? It dosen't seem like that much to fix the car up. And when I factor in the sound system value is close to $900 i'm really only paying $1100 for the car.
that car is definitely not worth $2,000 it sounds like a headache to me. I bought my 92 rs for $2,300 with 130,000 miles on it. the engine runs like new. I wouldn't give that fool anymore then $1,550 for that project car.
How much and what year?
91 RS w/ 71,xxx miles
oh yeah no subs, amp,or deck but i got all that
for $300 anyway throw in another $85 for a custom box.
It has survived two trips to Oakland and back
