Yup, he's right you can put the sensor back in the new cleaner unit. That's what I did with mine.
I bought a cheapy chrome cleaner and it had a little nub sticking out of it. I ripped it of with pliers because it was welded there.
Drilled the hole a tad bit bigger and the sensor snapped right in.
Mine has worked fine ever since with no problems at all.
I bought the non drop base type of cleaner and it came with a 2 1/2" element. Just bought a 2 1/4" K&N element for it and plan to put it in tonight.
By the way, if anyone is interested.........
The part number for that element is KNN-E-3740 if you shop at summit and it's part # 599-E-3740 if you shop at Jegs. They sell for just under $43 + shipping.
You won't find these numbers in their catalog, I've been looking for this for quite some time. I was at the Super Chevy show this past weekend and got the element from K&N direct. Yeah I paid more, but I got some nice goodies too.
Can't wait to see if I get a tiny gain from going from a crappy paper filter to a K&N.
I'll tell more once I get it in and see.

i drilled a hole in the bottom of mine for the sensor...got lucky and it fit perfect and i screwed it in there...im running a 14x3 and it clears the stock hood with no problems. make sure you get a non-drop base or youll be sorry...i had a drop base and it sucked...hit the throttle linkage, had to use the spacer. not worth it. with the non drop you dont have to use the spacer ring, and it clears everything fine.

Agreed
Drop base is a real pain to work around. I had a drop base for a few months. I got smart and bought a non-drop base, and took out that crappy spacer. Best thing I ever did, and it really makes things more accessible.
If you go non-drop, you might have to get a lower element or a higher hood for clearance.
I think the 2" would work great with no trouble. Still a good amound of air, and looks really clean.
I have the 3" element with non-drop plus a 1" TBI spacer, but my hood provides enough clearance for it all.
