I Need Some Guidance!

Hey guys... this is a GREAT board! I've been lurking a bit for the last few weeks, but just today got the word that a deal I have been trying to work on a 91Z28 was finally going to happen. So, now I come before you... :hail: ...hoping to get some help.

This car, from what I know, is a 91 Z28 with an All bore 383 motor, running TBI. I will be getting more info on the car shortly, and will post it up (cam, heads, etc). This is my first experience with a TBI car, and I'm not quite sure where to start, and what to do with this TBI setup. I had intially decided that I'd trash the TBI setup in leiu of a TPI or Carb setup, but having read this forum, I'm beginning to think that TBI can be used on this car for some time... if I can make what I've got do what I need it to do, why change, Right? What should I look for? What should I know? What should I read? What tools (computer and otherwise) should I look into? What advice do you have for a newbie?

I'm a Camaro Guy at heart, had a 93 Camaro and currently own a '00 Z28, this '91 is going to be a "play" car. Gimme what you've got... I'm ready to learn!

when you post up all the specs we will be able to help you more. a good first step for any new arrival is to do a complete tune up and filter change. put fresh fluids in the engine, tranny , and rear. regardles of how the previous owner claims to have treated the car, the only way to be sure is to tune it all up.

later

Without a doubt... I am a car guy, and this is ALWAYS step one... Just so you all know, I'm realatively well versed in LT1 lore and know LS1's VERY well, so I've got basic car **** down... but this type of injection system, what will fit and work with what on Series I small block chevys, etc is a mystery to me... As soon as I have all the info, I'll post up! Thanks!

Car: 91 Red Sled
Axle/Gears: 10bolt Richmond 3.73 Torsen
It's rather simple, TBI has all the properties of every other wetflow system (carb) but has the advantages of port injection. Better throttle responce, LOTS better gas milage, and a very simple fool proof system with the fewest parts .
You say all bore 383, do you mean a destroked 400 block? As in a 4.185 bore and 3.48 stroke?
Make sure you take a picture of the TBI and post the injector top colors. You might also want to check the fuel pressure, to do this you need to just tap imbetween the supply flex line on the drivers side frame rail. It's right above the power steering box, sorry no schraider valve!
Once we get a picture of your intake and specs on heads, cam, tranny, rear gears (posi?), and suspension work (like springs, torque arm, lower control arms...) we can help you better.
I'd also like to ask you to drop your ecm and check to see if it's a 7747 or 8746 ecm. Considering the previous owner swapped to TBI from TPI he might have gone with the truck ecm (the 7747) for a few less wires. There is a lot of information and anything/everything you can dish out only paints us a more vivid picture.

Ok... I have some more information...

Here are some of the features of the Motor:

- All Bore 383 w/TBI (350 bored .40 over) Forged TRW Pistons, rods, and Crank, New 1.6 Rockers, Balanced Rotating Assembly with high volume oil pump.
- Ported and Polished Vortech Street Heads
- Mild Cam ("Mild cam 218 Duration 246Lift or something like that" is what I was told)
- 3:42 with Auborn Positrac built at Chevy dealer.
- Flowtech Equal length headers w/3" cat back & flowtech muffler.
- Dry NoS system.. Plate/ 150 non-interchangable shot. 120hp. Bottle is full
- 700R4 4spd Auto Tranny
- Converter is set at 2550 Stall (sort of an odd number to me, but that's what it is...)

That's all I've got so far... I should be taking the car home this weekend, so hopefully I'll have a little more soon!
