Right topic maybe wrong forum
Hi. New to forum. Actually don't have the car but I do have a 96 LT1 from a Z I'm thinking of running in a 65 El Camino.
What intake would you use if you went to a carb and got rid of the injection system. No boos here as this is not currently the way I'm thinking of going. What carb as well assuming stock heads and LT4 cam.
Also looking at boring out 283 to 4 inches and dropping in a 327 crank (forged) with reworked heads (202) and about 72 cc's with porting and polishing and 9.5 flat pistons. I have a torker I but I'm thinking better driver with a dual plane and wondered about a Stealth here. Some say the Torker is doable but you can read a newspaper thru the thing. Not sure this motor can take it. 600 Holley here BTW.
Last thought is bore 283 to 4 inches (old block can take it) and leave in 283 crank to make 302. Problem here is pump gas and need for better heads, bigger cam, pistons, rods yada. I wondered about a dual plane here esp with air gap vs the Torker I since much higher RPM here.
So your thoughts? Keep in mind I'm very new to all this and I don't know much.

Really what your concerned with are two things when switching to a carb. The first is the size of the carb and the second is that the cam will be able to pull enough vacuum to keep your brakes and stuff working. Generally with the size of the carb there is a formula that you can follow. I don't have it with me right now, but for an LT1 there is really no need to go beyond a 750 cfm. The LT1 is a 350 cubic inch block. Actually, if you could find a 600 or 650 cfm you'd be good. A lot of people will disagree with me and say go with a bigger carb, but it really doesn't work well. As for the vacuum you shouldn't have a problem with the hot cam but if you're concerned you could drop in a vacuum storage canister.
Good luck,
Mike

For Arizona, mostly Maricopa county, including some if not the rest of the state, require that you have an egr if your car came with one-most did, then you have ta have it, they will do a visual and they can still fail you on that, most of the testors dont know how they work so you can prolly get away witha "it looks like its attached, but its not really" approach alot of guys here will install the EGR and cats for smog tests then remove them as soon as their done.

LT1 to Carb
Well still not certain which way to go yet. A lot of variables. Seems a waste to put a carb on that LT1 engine. I'm asking myself why not just put in a 350+SBC or BB.
The 327 is a good way as would be a crate like above.
As I said I have the Torker I and I believe it would be too much for a street engine esp even a 327. I wanted some opinions on not just engine but the engines contemplated with manifolds.
I gave too much info tho IMO so next time I'll just ask one question which is what manifold with the 327 with ~ .500 cam and 9-9.5:1 compression and 600 Holley. Is the Stealth ok?

After I read this post the creative juices started flowing and I got an idea. A 1 1/2 plane intake! Take a dual plane and grind down the middle ridge halfway and sharpen it to a point. In theory it would produce more torque than a single plane and more hp than a dual plane. I don't know just an idea.
Also would a tbi adapter act as a tb spacer?

Hey, Ii'm running the Holley Street Dominator intake, wiht a q-jet, all on a GM Goodwrench 350 crate motor, the 260 horse one, thats 1299 in jeggs. What intake would work best, with the stock heads/cam, adn the 8.5:1 comperssion I currently have? Is my intake actually a good choice for the engine setup I currently have? What about if I wanted to swap to a torqier cam, will this intake still work good, or, if I swap carbs?
WOW MUCHO POSTS. DID I MISS THE GM TBI VORTEC MANIFOLD ????? SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY I WAS INFORMED THE VORTEC HEADS WONT WORK SO I WENT EDEL RPM 11/2002) . VORTEC HEADS WITH THAT MANIFOLD SOUNDS INTERESTING
wow old thread!
I was thinking about the edelbrock torkerII single plane manifold, the only bad thing is it dont have any egr provisions. i guess since its not a PITA to swap manifods out i could get away w/o an egr and just swap the manifold out for smog.

Will swapping your intake force you to run a custom chip or will the stock ecm be able deal with the change reliably?
