I need a "how to" with vacuum on my Lg4.

Well, i think possibly my car could be having a vacuum problem. I dont know where to check it, what i should be pulling, whether i should be in park or drive, what my car should be idling at while i check for vacuum. Im totally ignorant to this situation. I have a carb, and when me and my mechanic last checked it, we pulled the vacuum line off of the back of the carb and put the gauge to it. I think it was like 6 pounds at idle or something. That has to be bad news. My idle performance sucks. My car pulls hard from 3k to a little over 5k. It used to be strong all throughout, but i believe i have vacuum leaks in various places. My heater doesnt kick out heat from the vents, unless i leave it on for about 45 minutes, then it will flow tons of heat. That could possibly be a vacuum leak. Im wondering, if anyone has any surefire vacuum leak spots to check, let me know. Also, if anyone has been in my situation, what did you do? My car still ran a 15.8 like it says in the sig in this condition, but i felt that i left a 15.3 or lower out there.
