it looks like I just joined that club (or maybe have been the president all this time and did not want to admit it)
I kind of went to the local wednesday night hang out last night. At about 9:30, I was just leaving an a 4th gen LT1 (cutout and a little cam) rolled through the parking lot.
I got in my car about the same time the owner of a second gen (80Z-28) did to head out after the 4th gen. The second gen (the one that made 350rwhp on a dynojet and smoked like a chimmey) has about the same motor as I do. (400 with aluminum heads, roller parts and such.) The 2nd-gen was behind the 4th at the light. I was behind the second.
The light turned green and the 2nd waited until the 4th had cleared the truck in the other lane and then changed lanes and punched it.
While still behind the 4th gen,, I punched it.. well... they both pulled away from me. 2nd smoking soo bad that I could hardly see them.
I did not stay on it long but i don't think the results would have been much different over the next few seconds.
The 2nd gen has an 350 auto trans and 3.42 gear.. not to mention that it weighs about 300lbs more than my 3rd gen.
My motor just never has hammered you back in the seat like it should. I guess I need to plan on some tuning time on a dynojet.. or pull the thing out and put it on a real dyno.
It should have over 500hp but it barely feels like 370-380.
i was happy to have it running for the most part but it should run better than that.

Put the engine and the gears in an Astro van
My van curbs 300 lbs LESS than my '85 IROC.
Your story sounds kinda like this guy I know. He has a ZZ4 shortblock, with a 224/230 comp roller cam, 1.52 rockers, Sportsman II's. I'll run him in my '85 IROC (posi converted to one-wheel-wonder by donuts, gutted cat, constant EGR SES light, and it runs at like 220*F all the time). We know it's the TPI choking the **** out of his engine.
