Tick,Tick, sounds of ping on acceleration..0 oil pressure at idle

this 78 305... is dying.... still got some life but....

at idle ..i'm getting a ticking... bad lifter..

but...when i give it some gas i'm getting what sounds to be pinging... but its not.................i've screwed with the timing...and nothing makes it better....

temp stays between 130 and 165.

Zero oil pressure at idle...and 22 psi cruising..............

its extremely annoying.. i've put big bucks into an exhaust and all you can hear is ping..and tick...................

it does this ..when cold. ..and hot...

i want to switch to a 350 ..but... i've got ... 15 bucks to my name..

should i drive this motor.... my buddy said it could be a rod bearing..????????????

A rod bearing is more of a 'cluncking' than a clicking or a tapping. You probalby won't get farther than 10 miles if it's a rod bearing.

Maybe you've got a rocker arm that needs to be tightened down. Give that a check, it's easy enough and it doesn't cost a thing...much less than a new engine.

your considering taking an engine with a tick and low oil pressure to the track? not wise.

Your low oil pressure is most likely caused by the oil sending unit that screws into where the oil filter is at...i would have the same problem, mine got a hole in it, and when the car was cold and idling, i had oil pressure, but when the car got a little warm to the point where the oil was thinned out, i had 0 oil pressure, obvisouly it cant be low oil pressure, because if it was, im sure your engine would be gone right now...

thanks for the posts.... ya know .. my oil pressure reads .... 0 at idle... 25 at cruise...when i'm going 55...and i let off the gas..it reads 30.......................and theres a ton of air in the line from the block ..to the gauge... is it normal to have air ..in the line.. i think it is....................

i think i over reacted... i've had some people say that ..if it where a rod bearing ..my engine would have been dead by now.....as well as having low oil pressure...............

the engine was pretty crusty inside............ i think maybe ill run sum tranny fluid..and / or ....gunk .............. through it .........

well... you guys have calmed me for a little bit ..at least ..

i appreciate... it. ..

sorry bout the spelling......... ( i had to take the edge off...tonight)
