emission regulation exemptions

Are certain year models exempt from meeting regulations for smog police? Someone told me 1985 and older cars don't have to worry about emissions. I've got a 1984 Z-28 and I want to rebuild everything and I'm kinda worried. There are no emission laws enforced here, yet, but I may not stay here forever. I may move to a place that coincidently has emission laws enforced, so I wanna build my car and do it once and do it right. Can anybody help me?

In MD, it's either '79 and earlier or before '79, forget which, might depend from state to state.

Depends on where you live. Federal law is any vehicle built after 1965 has to retain any emissions components the car came with. Of course, just about everyone violates that law. Beyond that it depends on your state, in Cali I think we are up to 1973 or 74.

It's also different from one county to the next in the same state! Where are you planning on moving to?

Well right now I live in AL, and no emission laws are enforced, but that may change sometime. I really haven't planned on moving out of state yet, but I may. I just don't want to have to worry about the smog cops, you know. What if I just had a cat on it? Would that be enough? Or would I need to keep the smog pump too?

Here in ohio in alot of the countys they run a tread mill test and test the exhaust coming from the veh. Not much luck getting away with no emissions equiptment. But its only some of the countys and it starts at about 79 and up. It stinks that some states and county have e check and others don't. Whats the purpose of having some areas checked if the county next to you or state is not checking. How is this making the world cleaner, its not just a way to collect more money. Thats my 02

Really depends on who inspects the car. I am exempt here in Pennsylvania because I put less than 5k a year on my camaro. However, it still has to be emission inspected. They do NOT sniff the pipe but they DO check for all emission related components applicable for that model and year. If you do pull off the pump just keep all the hardware. If your circumstance changes you can throw it all back on in an hour or so. As far as I know, on a federal level any car registered in any state must retain all emission components as long as it is used on public highways.

Good point. Sooner or later, they will be enforeced everywhere in the U.S. It's just a matter of time. Just plan to retain or provide for all the original equipment provided with the vehicle. Save the parts in a box somewhere if you don't intend to install them right away, but you won't have to try to buy them later if you need them. Try finding an EVAP canister for a 1384 Chevy in 2015, or an A.I.R. pump, diverter valve, etc. And realistically, none of those devices should cost you any performance or power - only some space under the hood. And if you're clever, they don't even have to be under the hood.

You know the just install a new 68,000 dyno machine here in Plano Texas. I know one of the people who works there and inspect the car changes oil and all that. Texaco express lube! Hell had to get a new sticker before he put in that machine. The old one was good for 6 months but fk that that new machine scares me

well here in jersey we're not too far from the laws in cali. If, however you have a 2nd car, you can register your car as a collector. No safety or emissions, and you re-register every 2 yrs. Only drawback is you get 3000 miles a year. Rhe drive the car for a mile to check make sure the odometer works and you also have to insure it with limited use insurance, but they dont always check for that. Im gonna give it a try come next time registration is up.
