Car won't stay running...

Heres the story. I have an 89 TPI 350. Yesterday, I drove around to a few places and the car was running fine. Came home parked the car as usual. Was getting ready to go out, about an hour later and my car won't stay running at all...fires up and then immediately dies. It will run if I keep my foot on the gas, but as soon as I let my foot off it dies. Occasionally though it will stay running but the idle is way low and the car is ready to shut off at any second. Anybody have any idea on what this could be? Thanks in advance.

It sounds like a vaccuum leak or your timing jumped.

Might wanna check your timing to make sure it is set properly. Also, get a can of carb cleaner and while the car is running spray it around all your vaccuum lines and see if the idle smooths out. If you find an area while your spraying the carb cleaner that the idle smoothed out, you found your leak.

It's also possible that it could be your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve, or the area surrounding the pindle on the IAC valve. You could pull the IAC valve out and then clean up around the pindle, and also clean the area inside the throttle; over time, carbon can build up around the valve and block air flow, leaving an inadquate air supply for idle.

But first, you'd probably wan to check for what 70Monte355 said before you go pulling the IAC valve out.
