the below pic is of a cross section, the green is the seal - a plastic/rubber like material, dark yellow is the guide, it is metal. the red is a spring cup that's for aluminum heads

The guy that said he could do them for me said he would take them apart and run a drill where the valve guide sits and the heads were burning oil does this mean i need both the valve seal and guides

not too sure on the drill part.... seems like that's a low clearance area between the valve stem and guide and i dont think you'd want a bigger hole for the stems to ride through so it can wobble around, unless he puts in oversize valves. either way this'll involve pulling the heads to get the valves out, which is a lot more work than just the seals.

as far as the oil burning, you need new seals.

over the time i've been on the board i've seen people get screwed by their mechanics cuz the mechanics had no clue, so beware

ALL TG's suffer from poor valve seal guides. My 89 puffed smoke at 20K miles. Do not rely on machine shop so called experts. Get GM Pt#12511890, they have a tech bulletin with reference to this problem. The fix is a positive umbrella seal and what they call a "viton" insert. I did the fix and it works well.

They can knurl valve guides which will pull some material out from the guide, but not remove it-which makes the guide smaller. Then smooth it out to the correct size. I would stay away from knurling. It's a short term fix. If the guides are shot, they need replaced.
