86 camaro 2.8 wont stay running
86 camaro 2.8 wont stay running
I've got an 86 Camaro SC 2.8, Untill recently it and ran like a dream. Now it seems to lag when I take off & wants to stall, unless I'm real easy. I usually take off from a roll in 2nd, but that isn't possible now.. I get down the road a few miles, and it just dies. (Before it dies, it has the feel that the clutch is slipping, but it isn't) I press the clutch and try to start it and no go. 20 minutes later I try and (after much cranking backfiring and protest), it starts. After it starts, it is hesitant on the throttle. Keeping it running is tricky. .I've checked the vacuum lines, and replaced the dist. cap, rotor button and plug wires, needed it anyway. Today I pulled code # 24 from it. I've read up on the codes but cannot make much sense of what I need to do. Any help is greatly appreciated to help me get my sweetheart back on the road where she belongs.

Two things I would check:
1. Check the ignition module. Whenever your car just spontaneously dies out of nowhere (especially when it's hot), it's often a good guess that it's something electrical. So replacing the plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor were a good bet, but the ignition module is often overlooked. They just pretty much can be working one minute, and all of the sudden they can crap out. You can take it to AutoZone to have it tested (test it several times to see what, if any, failures you get). I recently had a similar problem, except that my car wouldn't start again if it was warm.
2. Check the EGR valve. Checking the vacuum lines was smart, too (as they relate to the EGR valve), but it might also be a good idea to pull the EGR valve off and check it for carbon buildup.
Not sure that either one is neccessiarly your problem, but it never hurts to check...
Good luck

Thanks Sancho, I checked this, it seems to be in good order.. I did find the problem tho. The one thing we all overlook, the most obvious. The coil. My secondary was dead. Replaced it and she runs smoothe as can be, seems to have about 8% more power too. Tho the dist cap and button were in need of repair, and replacement made it run, the source of the problem was indeed the coil. Thanks for your input.
We are now cruisin again, Waxes up, and armor all'ed, T-Tops in the back, the sweet rumble of her V6 mill, Yes, this is heaven.

Wow, I think you're the first guy I've ever seen that actually likes his 2.8L f-body!
I'm currently driving an '88 Camaro SC with a 2.8L V6 (fuel-injected -- yours is probably carbed) and I'm getting really sick of having to put the pedal in half-throttle taking off just to keep people from wanting to pass me!
Glad you got it working, though!

Actually, I more than love this F-Body, I adore it! She's not Carbed, In fact she has the MPFI. Also is bored .030 and has a 5 speed. Even before I had it bored and racing pistons rings, and so forth put in it, there were few who could pass me. Now there are even fewer. She is a medium grey, with black racing stripes and custom wheels. Used to go about 125, now with the mods it'll hit 135, with more pedal left, but I prefer to slow it down. I'll try to post a pic of her on here. Anyway, thanks for your input, that will prolly be the next thing to go.
