My friend has a 2.8L 89' and everyonce in a while, he will have starting problems, he will have power to everything, lights, accesories, fan etc.. But it won't turn over.. he turns the key, and nothing happens. WE thought it might be the ground wire on the battery, because past times we have played around with the ground wires and positive wires and it finally starts. But the other day, he was going to a store, came out and it wouldn't start, i got there about 20 min after he got to the store, and I tried jumping the starter with a screw driver, thinking it may be heat soak or something with the solenoid. he had the key on the ON position, and when i jumped the starter with a screw driver, I could here it spinning, but it wasn't actualy engaging to the flywheel.. it was just free spinning, which seemed odd. i tried it again and same thing happend. but right after i did this, he tried starting it, and it started right up.. what could be the cause of this strange behavior..??
