white smoke when starting
Hey guys, I need to know what's wrong with my car. When I first start my car in the morning it starts right up with no smoke, but after an hour or so , when I try to start the car it takes about 10seconds to start and a white cloud of smoke comes out of the exhaust. It smell like unburnt fuel. Do you guys have any idea how to fix this problem.

heres the lowdown on smoke. a lot of people say WHITE smoke on this board at first, but then retract and say its actually blue or such.
White smoke: usually means water is getting into the cylinders. This can be a bad headgasket, or cars that have sat for a while sometimes will blow alot of white smoke for a few days. this is just due to water that has condensed in all of the systems due to unuse.
Blue smoke: this means oil is being burnt. The could be bad valve seals, or worst case the rings on the piston have gone bad; a compression test will confirm which one.
Black smoke: usually means excess fuel. What's called a "rich" condition in the engine, in carbs it means adjustment needs to be done. Its not too common in fuel injected engines however.

If it was a headgasket problem woulnd't it blow white smoke all the time when I start it. Because every morning I start my car and no white smoke comes out, but after a while when I try to start the car up, then a cloud white smoke comes out.If I was to wait 12hours after first starting my car, no white smoke would come out.

More than likely you have bad valve guide seals. The white smoke probably has a blue tinge to it. Stick you finger in the tail pipe and smell the residue. It's probably going to smell like burnet oil, if theres enough oil comming down it could cause firing problems after the car has sat for a few hours. If you were burning coolant, the tailpipes/smoke will smell sweet similar to sugar.
