air cleaner

hello-i'm hoping someone can answer this since i don't get much track time.i have a 2" cowl induction hood with aK&N 14X3 filter with the Xstream lid. i also have the dual snorkle air cleaner with the hoses that run to the radiator brace. which is the better setup?it doesn't seem like much air could get in thru the hood either way. any body do any testing with this? thanks for any help

I haven't used the dual snorkle but I've heard good things about them
with the cowel hood , and the air dam in place, I would think you would get plenty of flow from the K&N. I use the 14x3 edelbrock signature series and have had no problems.

i know the theory of a high pressure area in front of the windshield pushing air into the cowl. it seems to me tho the air coming into the car from the front would push air out of the hood and you would only be getting hot air to the carb.what if you ran hoses from the hi beams ,no bulbs, to the dual snorkle?

With the relatively high angle of the windshield on a ThirdGen, pressure at the cowl is not a real factor. That's why we enjoy a respectable drag coefficient on our cars (at least until all the decorative factory "ground effects" are added). The factory abandoned the whole "cowl induction" theory in about 1984 when the engineers won their argument over the sales and marketing staff.

Second generation 'F' cars had a more upright windshield, and would produce some significant pressure at the windshield base/cowl area. The cowl induction hood on these cars may have actually made sense.

FourthGen cars are so slippery that a cowl hood is always worth a giggle. The more effective system there is ram air scoops in the hood instead of a cowl vent. Even the factory figured that one out.

Yeah, but the ram air hoods look funny...maybe thats why the factory isnt going to produce anymore...

Yeah, if it were only a matter of changing the hoods to keep the line alive. Too bad. I'll hate to see the name badge reintroduced on a car looking (and acting) more like a Chrysler Sebring than a real sport car. Look what happened to the Impala.
