Will an aftermarket oil pump driveshaft install from topside?
Ok When I had my engine out of my car I replaced the oil pump, but When I got everything back together I realized I forgot the little plastic sleeve the couples the oil pump driveshaft to the oil pump. I would sleep alot better if IT had a sleeve on it, but I cant put the driveshaft dow nthe hole from the topside of the engine. The engine is already in the car and I do not want to pull it again and I really dont want to drop the oil pan while the engine is in the car. Does anyone know if an aftermarket oil pump driveshaft with a metal sleeve will fit dow nthe hole from the top of the engine?

If I remember right (been a while) yes it should.
Unlike the plastic sleeve setup, the metal one is pinned to the shaft, and dosen't require you to lock it in.
But I'm going on memory from a couple of years ago. Anyhow I'll post a pic I took of the pump w/shaft & metal sleeve.
Maybe someone else can confirm that the metal sleeve setup just slides on.

Well, I got the melling one from O'Reillys today and it doesnt fit in from the top. I guess for now I will have to run with no sleeve on the driveshaft.

Sorry 'Ward' but it's coming back to me now
I remember having to remove the oil pump cause I left it out. I assumed it would fall threw if I installed it upside down. I remember catching the problem before I put the pan on while it was on the stand.
How close is it 'Ward' ?
Think you could grind the sleeve thin enough to fit ?
You might be all right with out it, but I can see how you would lose sleep over it, cause I would.

You won't want to hear this, I can already tell....
It's no where near that close. The hole in the main cap where teh rod goes through has about 1/16" of clearance to the shaft. You can't really grind it that thin and expect it to work. Pull it now while your bearings are still good, or pull it later after your motor is trashed from oil pump failure. It's not worth the risk of breaking, which is near 100%.

there is no way around it unfortunately, your going to have to pull the pan. I would not grind the sleeve, as its purpose is to hold the 2 pieces together, and if it fails, the pump WILL stop turning. You cant just put the stock shaft in the hole either, as it wont engage the pump correctly, or for long, and you will be into the engine again. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
