Overheating
Overheating
Alright I overheat when it gets warmer out. even when its not so warm i run my ac so my fan stays on. But when its really warm even if i run my ac my car will sometimes overheat. First i thought it was my thermostat... Replaced it with a 180 thermo... Then i noticed my water pump was leaking so i replaced that. Next i replaced my radiator cap. It still wants to overheat when its warm out.
I think i need to do the timing on my car but i dont know if that has anything to do with it... And my underneath airdam don't seem to be right...Seems like its missing a peice because i got one plastic peice tht is just rounded. And my fan blade seems to be ok. One of the blades has a small small small chip out of it and i dont think it affected it at all. I dont know what to do... Give me your .02

Someone post this man a pic of what their airdam looks like . If that is not set-up right , it can cause it to run hotter than its suppose to .
Also , what kinda shape is your radiator in ? Need to hose it off , does it looked bugged or dirty ? ....When you changed the waterpump did you flush the radiator at the same time ? Or just replace the coolant you have lost ?
If these don't work , it prabably is the temperature sending unit .
Goodluck !
I don't think the timing would make it overheat .

Is this only during stop and go driving? Next time you turn your car off......check the lower radiator hose and see if its hot. If it is your thermostat is fine. Other than that I dont know what to tell you? Are you running a 50/50 mix??
Yeah im running a 50/50 mix.. I think its my air dam cause it looks nothing like that.. it looks like someone tried putting one on but its wrong... because its oval... its not like straight down. Ill take a pic of it tomorrow and show you. Im gonna drain my radiator sometimes and flush it and make sure its a 50/50..

J/K . Glad you did, cause my computer isn't working right now using the net, so I don't have my pics on this one. The air dam will only affect your cooling at highway speeds. A 180* stat won't help much if you don't change the stock fan temp switch, stock is at 220* or so, something much lower would be best. My air dam is kind of messed up, you can see it angles the wrong way, but doesn't affect my cooling. As far as your timing, if you're running lean, that will cause overheating.
Do you have a cat still? One that is clogging will cause overheating.
With the hood open, rev the engine from under the hood and look at the lower radiator hose, if it's collapsing, that's your problem.
Then again, are you sure your gauge is reading accurately?

Hey, my car was doing the same thing and I went through basically the same steps as you did. It still overheated. Then I noticed, "hey, the fans don't come on". So, one fan motor was blown, but since there's two, the other should work. I replaced the fan motor, neither would come on yet. So, sick of messing around with it, I wired them together, then to the battery, and mounted a good looking switch out of sight underneath the dash. She doesnt overheat anymore.
88,
Since you haven't already done so, a cooling system flush would be a good preventive measure. Instead of a 50/50 mix, try a 30/70 mixture (coolant/water). Pure ethylene glycol has a very poor latent heat capacity, and the mixture requires water to move heat effectively. Just mix to the minimum safe point for freeze protection in your area.
As for the air dam (lower air deflector), I know the Pontiacs are slightly different than the Camaros, but your stock installation should look something like this:

Keep in mind that this will only help with highway cooling, and if the engine overheats in traffic at slow speeds, the problem is more likely with coolant or air flow through the radiator (debris, clogged fins, etc.), or a scaled/corroded cooling system.
Timing will affect temperature, and running excessively advanced or retarded timing can generate excessive heat. A lean mixture will also conribute to overheating.
Are you actually overheating to the point of coolant loss, or is the temperature gauge just reading very high?

I put this post together after I found out what was making my 'roc overheat. Check it out:

Good Luck!

I would sat to check for leaves and dirt between your radiator and a/c condenser core.
I found a whole bunch of crap between them on my car when I did the camshaft swap.
I believe that all you would have to do to look is unbolt the upper fan shroud and gently/carefully tilt the radiator back and take a look see.
just my .02

hey guy atlanta here...going thru cooling woes myself..but here is my take on it....first thing first is everything in good working order? waterpump...cooling system been flushed..yada yada yada...ok already done all that? ok next thing is call hypertech...lol.....my car overheated installed 180 stat any help? nope..lol...okay i find ohh damn my fans are not turning on what gives? well its 2 things actually for me....first thing drivers side fan is controlled by the computer chip...get a thermo master from hyper tech that will take care of that...then order a cooling fan switch that screws into the right hand cylinder head...that will turn on the passenger side fan much sooner...then i had to throw in a 160 deg stat per hyper tech to work with the new chip..cooling woes are over...yipeeee...there may be cheaper ways to operate your fans,,,but i like mine to be automatic...im lazy...lol..later bro and good luck

This is why I love my fan controll. With this I can make my fan come on at any tempature I want. Right now I have it set to 200* on the highway my temp is down to 160* and in traffic is around 190 to 200*
Thanks for all the help guys... IM gonna try flushing my radiator tomorrow and make sure i have the correct coolant mixture. My fans work alright... I run AC so it stays on at all times... But i sometimes still overheat.. It dont seem like i have the correct Airdamn on there. And i saw the pic of your air damn and i saw the things that hold it on.. I have those but nothign connected to them... But i also have a weird thing on there that prolly the person before put it on thinking it would work. But im pretty sure its the air dam... But im gonna flush my system tomorrow.... Thanks again
Ok i just did what that kid told me to do that had that link to clean the ac radiator thing.. Well between by 2 radiators all i had was some like particle buildup... Mostly dusty... Very dusty when i brushed it and there was a 4x4 peice of paper in there dont think that would affect it or do ya think it would? I really dont think i have an air dam ill have to get my friends digi cam and take a pic tomorrow... Where online could i order an air dam and how much?
