Heads and Horesepower
Hey guys, I am in the process of building a mild 350. I got the entire engine for $50 Cdn and it has 70 000 miles on it. My question concerns the heads. The casting number is 333882. I know these are "smog" heads from the mid 70s with 76 cc combustion chambers. Would it be possible to make upwards of 300 hp with these heads on a 350, or do the 76 cc combustion chambers just kill compression way too much? By the way, I'm looking at one of the following cams: Comp Cams 252H or 260H. Thanks for any help.

I agree, that would be a no.
You'll be lucky to crack 275 HP with them, considering that factory motors that came with them were only good for about 170 HP.
Get the XE262H, the XE series are far better cams than those older designs. The XE262 is probably worth 15-20 HP over the old 260H.

It is possiable to make that much hp with those heads I can't remember the cc of the combustion chamber but as long as your compression ratio is right you should be fine. If I remember correct those heads don't have too bad of flow numbers.
The 882 heads arn't too bad of a head. If I am correct they don't have accesory holes in the heads.

The 882 heads can be made to flow decent, the problem is with the chamber. The size of the chamber will hurt the power of the engine, as the flame travel just takes to long, and the chambers do not have good swirl. With flattop pistons and a .0.0 deck, which is about normal if the block hasn't been decked, you will have about 8.6 compression. If you deck the block, it will get close to 9-1. You could make close to 300 hp with them, but you would have to rework them alot for much more than that. Consider buying different heads if possible. The vortec heads are GREAT, better than the old 2.02 heads from GM even. Pretty cheap, and for not much more than it would cost to fix your 882's, more power.
