vortec heads-----------
ok considering their low price, i am seriously considering them
realisticly, how well do they improve performance
i realize that i will have to get them shaved to maintain my nice compression ratio, thats not a problem
i would also like to know what a good cam would be to run with these heads that will get me the most.................
would i have to upgrade the valve springs with this cam??????
i believe that these heads also come in aluminum
???????????????
whats your take on these heads.....................?

hot rod I believe it was got something like 390hp with the stock Vortec heads and a Comp X/E268, with an edelbrock intake.
The heads really arent all that much cheaper if you think about it, heads:450$, vortec intake:2-250$$, self alighning rockers: 100$ the heads dont really respond to porting very well, and if you want any serious lift you will need new springs...also, the have 1.94 valves.

i have a 406 in my formula and they seem to flow really good for me.. ran a 12.7 1/4 mile and the carb isnt fully tuned yet. so i have no complaints josh is right though get a better set then stock valve springs.. mine start to float around 5,800 rpm and that maybe do to the 400 having the shorter stroke but i would still upgrade if i was u.. i need to and will soon..

The 400sb chev has a LONGER STROKE than the sb350 ect... 3.75" actually....
Anyways i hate when people talk when they dont know better.
The Vortecs with "only" 1.94 valves flow better than any other GM factory iron head ever made. They are a very big bang for your buck.
Tom get them to accept lift, you need to do valve guide work.
As far as porting goes, just clean up the exhaust just like ANY OTHER sb chevy head.
Good pruchase, go for it. Remember these heads used are very inexpensive & so is the work to ge them to accept over .470 lift.

I would say that vortec heads, intake and springs are quite a bargain. My heads(dart pro 1 alum.)assembled cost me 1300.00 by themselves.

thats about what i'm shootin' for
i think vortecs are the way to go
thats kinda like my goal with this car........most bang for the buck
AFR's are nice, but way too much green for me to spend rite now
also, with this setup and a T5 what would be a good rear gear ratio
i'm looking for off the line and not really top speed (mainly cuz i have no where to use the top speed)
i'm thinking either 3.73 or 4.10.......................

If it weren't for the straight spark plugs I'd be all over them...but now that I've had angle plugs for a while I'm spoiled and can't go back.
