Another engine swap question

I have '84 recaro T/A with 305 engine. It started to make really strange noises at high rpms so now i'm thinking about an engine swap. But i'm not sure what i want to do is possible so i need some opinions on this.If you can help me out i'll be glad.First of all i want to keep my carburetor that came with '84 305 engine and use it with a 350 engine. And is it possible to make the hood air intake work.I don't know how the air intake suppose to work or if it's working or not.Is there a way to test it?And is there a way to make it work with the new engine?

The cowl induction hood used a vacuum actuated flapper valve, IIRC. The operation of this would not be affected by an engine swap so long as the same induction system is used. All passenger car SBC blocks are the same external physical size, so the position of the components would remain the same. Alignment should therefore be "automatic", and connection of th econtrol system consists of a vacuum solenoid valve and vacuum source to the intake - the same as it is now.

As for the swap itself, it might be a good idea to understand what the source of the problem is before you change engines. It would be a shame to bolt in a fresh 350 or 400 SBC to solve the noise, only to discover after the fact that the noise is a bad transmission pump or torque converter.

A little more detail on the problem might be helpful.

Thanx for the detailed explenation.I don't really know much about the engine really.I've got the car 2 months ago.I have not much information about the car right now.i have no idea what kind of engine or what kind of transmission it has.I'm not even sure if it's the orginal engine or transmission.I'm not sure but i guess the car had an accident before. Many stuff changed with the car and i'm collecting bits and pieces of information so i can undersand what happened to the car before. The engine has the orginal carlburator and air filter with intake.I'm gonna try to restore the car and keep it.So i think it could be logical to get a new engine. This cars odometer is at 250.000 km's.But like i said i'm not sure about the engine. But it runs pretty strong and quick.I already have a problem with the transmission.Sometimes it's making a strange continous noise that goes up and down with the rpm.But it's not always. And the sound that i was talking about happens at very i high rpm's when i push the gas pedal all the way down after it downshifts. It does that metallic sound for awhile and goes away. But it's a metallic sound like pistons are hitting something costantly(kinda hammering but very rapid). And it started to happen right after oil and filter change. That's the most detail i can give i guess.

Sounds like a timing problem to me....Could the noise you are hearing be detonation/pinging? Maybe buy higher octane gas and see if that has an effect. Just a guess,,,

I was already using higher octane. For several weeks i'm using regular octane. And it wasn't doing the same sound before the oil change. But i'll give it a shot.Thanks.
