Whats an auxillary valvebody
Riley,
In the middle of the 1986 production year, the TH700-R4 was fitted with a modified valve body with a provision for mounting an additional auxilliary valve body. The additional valve body is mostly an accumulator of sorts for forward clutch engagement. This smoothes the "apply feel" for DRIVE, but there can still be a noticable "jerk" into DRIVE. There is also a check ball in the case to slow and smooth the reverse clutch engagement.
A few other changes were made by Hydramatic at the same time, including a new transmission oil pump with more vanes (ten versus seven) for less pulsation and noise, a change in the mounting of the pump input shaft bushing, the change from a single slider spring to two on the pump, and a few other minor refinements like increased oil passage sizes for the oil pump discharge, lockup valve, etc.
My late '86 (July '86) has the newer style trans. Anything after that should also have the changes. There is supposedly a subtle difference in the trans oil pan on cars with the auxilliary valve body. Those with the auxilliary body supposedly have a slightly deeper pan that is completely flat on the bottom, but I haven't been able to verify that. Anyone want to clarify this?
