how to set timing???

I am looking for a simple way to add a few "free" horses to the 350. i have set the timing before in mustangs, but dont know how to do it for the GMs.
is it the same idea.....loosen dist. bolt...use timing gun...etc etc???
is there a special way to set the timing for the GM cars?
I also herd that when you GM cars dont like to have the timing advanced at all. is this true? what degree would you say that i should set it to? is factor 10 like Ford? if so, about 14* should add a few xtra hp

14* is gonna be a lot for the street. A more reasonable # for your engine should be about 6*.

To set it, disconnect the wire by the heater box with the brown stripe on it (thats the spark advance). Loosen the distributor bolt, and start the engine. Look down at the timing tab through the water pump with the gun. You'll see the mark.

you must unplug a wire on the side of the dist. and then set it, the timing markers are above your harmonic balancer I believe. Dont't for get to do that wire thing.
