LG4 Timing : 0° or 6° ???
LG4 Timing : 0° or 6° ???
Hi,
a friend own a 85 Camaro with LG4 engine. He can't find the "emission sticker" and he wants to adjuste the timing.
So I searched for the stock value on this board : some read 0° BTDC on their stickers and others have 6° BTDC !?!
How can you explain ? Year ? Califonia ?
Thanks !

On my 86 IROC the sticker reads 0 deg. I think the 6 deg is eithert for the 305 H.O. or peoples preference. I do believe though that all computer controlled LG4's are set at 0 deg (somebody may correct me though). Don't forget to disconnect the 4 prong connector at the distributor before setting it!

Well, there's one topic where someone says he reads 6° on his sticker :

my sticker says 6* btdc aswell... that's for 85 w/the q-jet.... perhaps it's the difference in carb / tbi / tpi / crossfire that accounts for the different settings

Forgot to mention, mine's for an 84 (with no knock sensor). Why would they DROP the base timing when adding a knock sensor (in 85)? That don't make no sense.

Well, does the transmission (auto or man) can changes the prefered timing setting ? I guess the answer is "no"...

Best info I've amassed says LG4, 0 degrees; L69, 6 degrees. Type of tranny didn't change anything. If you got a "new" sticker that says 6 degrees, it's probably an L69 sticker.
Most LG4's run fine with 6 degrees. Although I'm running 10 degrees right now and still using bottom grade unleaded with absolutely no pinging problems. Run the most that you can get away with, without having to use higher octane.
Power rating is more than just compression. Exhaust will affect what number they give it.

my orignal sticker said 6* and it was a LG4 (right now it's computer controled and it runs it all the way to 50* total during certin points, and it hasen't pinged once yet

The original sticker on my 83 Trans Am with the LG4 says 6* for both stick and automatic. Im running about 12* right now with no problems and its already 110 degrees out here in PHX adn im running 87 octane.

To add another point, I found an almost completely bone stock 83 Z28 in the junkyard on Saturday that was an LG4 right down to the single snorkel and the label also said 6*, and it was a completely different three letter code than mine.
I'm beginning to wonder if the difference isn't the California emissions. Classic industries only lists two labels for 84 Camaro 305--one with Cali emissions and one without.
