HELP, I need Laptop Help for the Net
Sorry it's not car related, but the internet on my laptop hasn't been working lately. And I'm getting tired of my 166mhz desktop.
Here's what it's giving me, the modem will dial and connect, but this is what's listed on the properties page.
res://c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll\dnserror.htm#http:thirdgen.org
what is this dns error and how do I fix it?
Also, my Aol Instant Messanger won't work either.
Oh yeah, and for the last week I was at college on T1, it gave me the same problems.

well... the dns stands for dynamic name server if im not mistaken. As fro all the problems, if the modem connects and gets online, the problem probably isnt there. Maybe a corrupt file associated with aol or your browser. But then again, i didnt go into mechanical engineering because of my amazing computer abilities

"Name service" is the mechanism by which things like
Thirdgen.org get linked to a particular port on a particular box.
Your ISP dedicates "servers" to provide this translation.
Either your box does not know which server is to be used
or the server to be used is having a bad day.
Your box learns which server it is to use either by you telling
it what to use or by an automatic mechanism such as DHCP.
A reconnection to your ISP will reinform your box if you
use this sort of mechanism.
Sooo....
After connecting to your ISP...
From a DOS shell...
type...
ipconfig
Now ping the box listed as the DNS server...
If you can't get there
ping the box listed as the "gateway"
If you can't get there but are certain you've established a
session call em the problem is on their end.

When I opened the prompt. It showed c:documents and settings. I type ipconfig, but it said it isn't a recognized command or something. I even tried to type c: instead of having the docs and setts after it but wouldn't let me.

This ..
res://c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll\dnserror.htm#http:thirdgen.org
looks like its coming from you hard drive there. Notice the C:\
Got a few questions.
>what version of windows or mac are you using?
>can you browse the internet on other web sites
>if you can list step by step what you do from turning the pc on to getting this error.
Here are a few things that you might try. Now I dont know the Operating system that you have so I list how to do it in both.
Connection problem
>if you dial and it does seem to connect but you cant get pages
1st question is= do you have a ip address
(an ip address will tell you if you are connected to the net of not)
>you shold be able to get a ip address from the command prompt from any os (operating system) but here are two ways to get one.
>on widows 95 - Me you can
>click start, click run
>type winipcfg, hit enter
>find some kind of dial up modem or ppp addapter at the drop
down box that you find at this window called "ip configuration"
>select it and checked the ip address in the box that says ip address.
><font color-=red>DONT POST YOUR IP HERE</font>
>you ip should not say 0.0.0.0 or 169.254.xxx.xxx or 192.168.xxx
>if you have a network(more that one pc connected to together at you house) you might see 192.168.xxx.xxx
These three are invalid
>if it has one of these hit the renew button "not renew all"
For windows 200 and XP and everything else this may work
>click start click run
>type in command or cmd
>in the black screen type this ipconfig
>it may show you more that one ip address
>check them all and see that they are not one of the invalid
ones listed above.
>what ever they are try typing this ipconfig/release
>now type ipconfig/renew
>then type ipconfig/all
>now is the ip still invalid?

Step 2 Does you dial up modem have conflicts
On any os right click on my computer then select properties.
>window 95-ME
>Click the device mananger
>click the + next to network addapters
>is there a red X question mark or ! point here?
>what is under network addapters?
>is aols browser corrupted?
>call them and have them try to uninstall and reinstall aols browser
Continuing on below soon....

Mark,
I've got a coule of things for you to try. If I understood correctly your modem was connecting so this should work.
1. connect.
2. go to ms-dos prompt(start, programs)
3. at command prompt type following:
ping 127.0.0.1..check for 4 replies.
ping 204.71.200.75..check for 4 replies.
ping www.yahoo.com..check for 4 replies.
4. if any of these pings fail, you may have a problem with TCP/IP and/or Dialup networking.
Give me some more info on your system. What version of Windows, version of IE? Just reply and I'll help you the best I can. I work for Microsoft and I can use all my tools while I'm still here.

DNS: Domaine Name Service. I hate this error cause 99.9 percent of the time I cant fix it from where I am here at work. THEY GIVE ME NO TOOLS!!AAhhh Well your computer needs the ip(internet protocall address) to view a web page. And there is now way that you can store all the ip address on your pc. The DNS servers store the ip address of a certain area on a massive set of hard drives. Now lets say you want to go to www.yahoo.com Ok you type that in you computer there and then your pc send out a request to the DNS for the ip address of www.yahoo.com. The DNS service will look through its records and find that ip address for you. At this time if the DNS server has the record then it sends it back to you. Now when you receive the ip address of yahoo.com Your web browser uses that address to connect to yahoo. When yahoo receives your request for thire web page they send it back to you and you receive the web page.
Thats about the least that you can break down DNS. Now as far as a dns going out thats kind of rare. Any other kind of error with DNS may be more common.
What I'm looking at is that error you posted up there Mark. Now its looking at your hard drive like you had this web page saved to you pc. Keep in mind a web page has a forward slash/
and a file on your pc has a back slash\
If you dont have it resolved by now post some more info on whats going on and I'll see what else you can try.

Yup, and actually, it's $35 or just the toll charges on the free support. That is if you consider that free!?!?

Guys, I'll try it in a few hours. They're serious Tornado warnings here now. Hopefully it won't be bad though. Not long ago we got an F4 here in So. MD, I was off at college, I really hope it doesn't happen again.
I'm on XP by the way.

redbird, my steps are to just starting the computer and dialing out. Nothing out of the ordinary.
I couldn't get the MS Prompt to work right. I can't get it to read c:
it reads d:\Docume~1\Mark I type c: but won't change
So I typed the ipconfig and say is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file
When I click on the monitor icons at the bottom once I'm connected, you know the thing that shows how much data has been sent. I click on properties or something and it shows an IP address for my computer and the host computer.

OK,
1st redbird
I did the right click on my computer and properties.
First thing popped up saying rundll.exe was unistalled or not installed
I then went to hardware and network adapters, no modem was listed , but I went to the modem section, and I didn't see any errors there and it said the device was working properly
2nd,
I got the prompt to read c: but i typed in ping 127.0.0.1 and read is not recognized as an internal or external command

Mark, did your laptop come with XP or did you upgrade it...if the later , you may have a hardware conflict..even if it says it is working properly, you may need to upgrade the drivers. I'm no tech, but ive sure had my problems with XP and compatibility...If you have the XP CD, you can run the compatibility wizard on it. Just a thought.
Also Mark, didn't you say in another post you were receiving strange e-mails...have you ran a good virus scan?
Ive had to reinstall XP 3 times do to incompatibility issues, you may have to also.

Another thing you could do is system restore to a date before the error started. Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, and system restore. Just go back to a date that you remember was working properly. If you don't like the state your in, do it again and choose Undo my last restoration. This will put you back to the state your in today. OK!? Give this a try and let us know what happens.

I upgraded to XP soon as it came out, so it's been awhile, and haven't had any internet problems the whole time.
I would try the system restore but stupid me disabled it. Kind of a long story on that one.
Also, the weird emails were after the net stopped working on my laptop if I remember correctly. Only happened on my desktop, though even if it were, wouldn't this computer act weird too.

hmmm......good point. Well Mark, there is always the reinstall if you cant get it fixed, you must have a corrupted file somewhere..have you tried to run scandisk.....my computer/right clikck c drive click tools tab.....run scandisc...you have to restart when it says so...seems crazy how they ask ya if you want to run it , then tell you you cant....until restart...........good ol Microsoft...I must say XP is a definate benchmark though. good luck, cars are more fun , HUH?
PS all it takes is one program to crash the system, have you added anything new lately?

I'll try scan disk first.
I really don't want to redo everything, XP is a pain in the *** making it work with other programs and the such. I'm not sure where my original cds are for this computer. Oh well, I might just have my Dad take it to a computer shop see what they can do.
Anyone know why the ipconfig or ping isn't working for me?

Ping, ipconfig are generally part of a TCP/IP protocol
stack package. I havn't installed XP as of yet so I don't
know where its kept on XP boxes.
Microsoft is a peculiar company it isn't capable of inventing
anything on its own so it normally appropriates someone
elses program, renames it, extends it and calls it a
"development".
It may be that they have "invented" their own "ping".
All that aside...
My guess is that you need to reinstall your TCP/IP
protocol stack....
Too much appears to be missing...

You mean reinstall my Online Gateway, software? I don't have that anymore, looks like I need to get a hold of them.
It's weird, the only thing out of the ordinary that happened was this. On Sun. it was working fine at home, went back to college on T1 didn't work. That nite going to my room, it was pouring down raining. I had my laptop in the case in one hand, and my ext. HD in my book bag. I ran down the hill to my room, looked like I fell in a pool. Inside the laptop case was dry. If anything would have messed up, I was thinking my ext HD, cause it was bouncing around in my bookbag, that's the last time the net worked.

Oh a further note on the scandisk recommendation. From start/run , try running an SFC /scannow that will scan the machine for any file changes and/or corruptions , it will require the XP cd though so you may need that, that may find the problem but unlikely...
Do some more investigation. Sounds as if your path to your ping and ipconfig just aren't mapped to your D drive. Do a search for them, start/search and then try to find ping and ipconfig, you will need them to diagnose this.
Once you find them, or if you find them go back and do as the others have told you, ping IP and Name(yahoo.com or thirdgen.org or whatever), also ping your localhost(the 127.0.0.1) that will tell you where the problems are in your tcp/ip stack.
Another common problem we have here at work with the damm microsoft tcp/ip stack is from 3rd party spyware programs, such as newdot.net, webhancer, and a few others, do you have any firewall software installed? such as norton internet security? mcafee firewall? zonealarm? If you have any of these programs, I would go to add/remove programs and uninstall them, couldn't hurt. Usually they will pull the registry settings out and fix the tcp/ip problems... but in some cases such with the newdotnet software it just breaks ****.... usually have to rebuild the entire tcp/ip stack and extract a winsock and do all kinds of stuff(basically what I'm saying is, just format if it comes down to it )
Drop me an email, I'll answer any questions.

Well, I've moved some files from my C drive to the D drive, since I have almost no room left on that, I've moved some files to the D drive. That may have caused my problems, but I used it that day and didn't move anything important in between using the net.

If it were me what I would do is throw XP in the trash and burn it. Then get you a windows 200 disk. The problem with new operating systems is that when they upgrade the new computers to XP it may work fine. What if you had all this equitment that you already have that is not recognized in windows Xp? This is where the trash can and the burning come into play. I would only use a os that is atleast a one to two years old. But thats just my opinion.
rundll.exe missing or uninstalled? This raises some questions.
I guess we still need to find out if you have a valid ip address or not. This remember dont post you ip address here. On windows XP this is how you get the ip address and may also tell us where the problem is.
1 click start, click control panel
2 click network connections
3 click network connections again if you see it here
>if you dont see it you in the right window
>what all do you have here?(icons I mean)
4 at this screen you should have a icon that represents
you dial up connection
5 if you find it click it twice
6 here click your support tab and it should show you the ip
>remember we want something other that 169 or 0.0.0.0 or 192
7 hit the repair button
>post any error messages here
1 As far as the ping not working lets make sure you did try it this way
2 click start click run
3 type in command or cmd and hit enter
4 no matter what is says in that device mananger type
ping www.yahoo.com
5 tell us what it does
>if it does not recognize that I would start looking into that
run.dll error
To check winsocks needed browse
1 click start and go to search for files and folders
2 under named type this
winsock.dll
>then click search
>report the size of the file and the location here
3 look for this one also
wsock32.dll
>then click search
>report the size of the file and the location here
4 those should be the same as any other os
>they havent changed them yet
5 while your at the search look for
run.dll
>it should find something
I will be looking into the run.dll issue for a while here. Nothing better to do here at work. If I cant find the answer there are about 1300 tech support reps in the building that may know.
I'll be here till 5:30 and its 1 right now.

I do have spyware from using Kazaa, but that's been since last summer.
Redbird,
the ping www.yahoo.com gives me the same error message that it's not a valid command.
as far as those files
c:windows/system32 3kb
and the 2nd one is 21kb
the only run.dll I have found is
scrrun.dll 145 kb in c:windows/system32

Hmm... guess you dont have a way to download it to the pc that you on and transfer app to the broken lap top. You could network them together if the laptop has a NIC (plugs into your t-1)

I have no clue about networking computers, and probably no cables for it.
I have checked the ip , you know the monitor that pops up at the bottom, I clicked on it, and went to properties.
It gives me an IP for me and the remote (I believe that's what it called it) computer I'm connected to.

You might try installing tcp\ip to what ever that it might bind to. Lets just say that we have a internet connection because you have a ip address. Now you may be able to use a connection and the part of tcp\ip that has the app such as ping and all those well they might be missing so we can try to add them, though half of them are added. Try this...
start>controll pannell
>network connection
>another network connection possibly
>what is listed in here?
>you should have one for you dial up
>if you can identify it click twice on it
>here hit the properties button
>click install
>select protcall
>select microsoft on the left
>select tcp\ip on the right
>hit ok on all these windows
>reboot the pc
>try to connect
>if no try the ping> it should have install the componets
The most important tool we need is the ping tool. With out that this could be a range of issues. If it is a DNS issue try browsing with yahoos ip address and type this in your address bar.

XP is great, you just have to be careful what programs you install. I think at this point, Mark, a reinstall may be needed. Once you figure out what will run with XP, it is great. fast start-up, I never need to restart, I'm on cable modem, so much better than dial up, The only bad part is dealing with ***...another monopoly..
