block is machined on the deck to accept stainless steel wire (o ring) to cut into copper head gasket. it improves the seal between block and head

thanks ede..that was easy...so it helps save headgaskets when running high compression.Correct?

my old dirtbike, a 91 RM-125 used rubber o-rings for a head gasket. my new CR125 uses a flat metal gasket....i dunno i likes the o-rings better, you can reuse them with A LITTLE Red silcon.
