engine ideas

hey guys,

with my 305 out of order, i am faced with a engine question,

which sounds cooler/ or is better

a 400 stroked to a 427

-OR-

a 400 destroked to a 322 with twin turbos

now i am doing all of the pros and cons, and right now the 322 is winning, can anybody fill me in with more info for the parts of this engine, i don't know too much about turbos yet.

thanks
andrew

I'm not sure how you'd destroke a 400 to a 322(I don't think that is even possibly), but why the hell would you? It would cost more or the same as stroking the 400 to 427, so just throw twin turbos on that.

if you get a 3.00" stroke crank, the math comes out to be about a 322, it is not that hard, a custom crank from scat cranks.

also, i want to try something else. i go to michigan tech for mechanical engineering, and eventually i will be able to design all of the stuff i need for this.

but seriously, all of the pros and cons are leaning towards the twin turbo v8. also the high reving would be pretty damn sweet in my mind.

Get with Jester about the trials of installing twin turbos on an SBC in a ThirdGen.

Personally, with all the odd balance issues, I'd probably steer away from a shorter stroke 400 case and crank at high RPM. A 4.060" bore at 3.25" stroke would still be plenty oversquare for higher RPM, and would yield a few more cubes to boot.

And finding good dished pistons for a 400 might not be easy. Even with 76cc heads, the static compression with flat tops is going to be over 9:1 - not good with all that turbo boost.

Man i'd love to see a 322 with twin turbos, that thing would tach. Build it with all the goodies so you can achieve 9000 rpm blasts, for $50,000 or so.

what is wrong with a 400 case at high rpms?
or what about a 377" build up?

i would rather use one of my two 400 small blocks to build a sweet engine for my car.

and you have to remember that i am not going to go buckwild and pushing 50psi of boost

and seriously, i want to build an engine to tell all of those little pimply faced youths that say that their car is faster because of their turbo, and domestic guys saying "if we used their technology, we would have crazy *** power", and no one ever does.

also because of displacement i will easily make more power with cheaper turbos.....to a point.

a smaller displacement motor, also allows for the use of a cheap TPI manifold. and with turbo boost, i have no worries that that manifold wont deliver enough air at high rpms.

also this would allow for the use of more plentiful heads, like a 350 head that flows quite nicely stock. the use of these heads would make a nice compression ratio with the right pistons.

the turbos and parts can easily come from a jap-crap junker, and for reasonably cheap. have you ever seen the prices of t4 turbos are on ebay?

the small displacement would also allow a decient fuel economy at crusing speeds. and so would a 6-speed.

also i would love to see the look on the guy's face in the lane next to me with his farting car, as i rev my engine and then the blow off valves let off the pressure. two words, "Kodak Moment"

well
