Frustrated with "86 305 TPI

First off i bought the car in january and let it set all winter long. I would start it up about once a month. When i went to start it this month, the battery was dead. So, i recharged the battery, and all the car does is crank and crank and does not ignite. I pulled a spark plug wire off, and it has a good spark to it when grounded. I cant get the plugs off of the damn thing. A few trade secrets would help guys.... haha well anyhow i know its getting fuel because theres gas in my oil.... so it cant be a clogged fuel filter or a faulty pump. I was thinking something along the lines of me needing to do a computer reset since the battery went dead..... any ideas? Btw i took the ignition module out and had it checked, and it passed. Thanks a lot.

Bones,

If it will crank forever, the starter is probably O.K.

Luther,

Have you tested for fuel pressure at the test port on the right fuel rail? It sounds like you have fuel if it's in the oil, but the pressure may be very low.

And since you have fuel in the oil, it is probably all over the plugs too. Wet plugs won't spark, so it would be imperative to get them out. The #6 and #8 can be a little tricky, but the rest aren't too bad. You'll have to get them sooner or later, anyway.

Once you do get it started and warmed up, changing the oil would be a good idea.

What kind of a gauge do i need to test fuel pressure? Where can i get one? And what kind of a socket-extension-ratchet combo are you using? I still have the heat shields and smog pipes on my engine.... tough to get to, im not very limber... thanks for the reply

There is a dedicated fuel pressure gauge available for about $40. You can try to borrow one or use an HVAC gauge manifold (the fittings are the same). If you use an A/C gauge manifold, make sure you clean and dry the hoses after using it to prevent contamination of any HVAC systems it may be used on.

As for the plugs, a regular plug socket, 3" extension, and ratchet work for me. There are a few plugs that are easier to get with the socket and an open end wrench that fits the hex on the socket (usually 3/4"). My engine is bone stock with all the accessories and emissions equipment in place, too.

I once had a stuck open injector that caused a no/barely startable condition. I found it by accident when running through the standard pull plugs (one was wet) and going through cylinder compression check. While cranking over, large volumes of gas shot out the spark plug hole. I recently read a post on diagnosis where the mechanic drained 5 gallons (yes GALLONS) of gas/oil from the crankcase because of this same situation.
If you have spark and fuel pressure, this may be something to check.
The passenger side bank of plugs can be easier changed from the bottom - not necessarily 2 & 4, but definitely 6 & 8. Beware, the started and, thus the live battery cable are right there. You will want to disconnect your dead battery when you do this to be safe.
Good luck.
