The only experience with cheap auto transport companies is VERY BAD. My dad and I have had cars transported , three different companies, I've had 1, he's had 2. All 3 were damaged when they arrived at their destination. I won't ever use a cheap company again. Why don't you get a cheap flight to where the car is and drive it home, could turn out to be a load of fun
(if of course the car is in good enuf shape to make it)

I just had one transported Texas-Cali about 2 months ago, they didnt screw it up so I guess thats a plus. The name of that company is Dependable Auto Shippers http://www.dasautoshippers.com/ From what my friend tells me (and he would know) a company called Reliable Carriers is the best. http://www.reliable-carriers.com/
The most common damage to transported cars is the undercarriage. Check the front and rear bumpers, spoilers, and anything under the car for damage. Thats where it'll get screwed up. Preferably get the current owner to take lots of pics of those areas for you. Make sure to check out the car very carefully when you get it.

I think I got a quote already from both of those companies. Both are around $800 bucks.
I would fly then drive home but,
1. Indiana -> California is kinda far.
2. The car has really low miles, hate to add that much on that quick.

Price sounds about right. Almost every carrier has insurance above and beyond the norm if youre really worried about the car. Usually helps make them a little more careful with the car. Enclosed trailers are also better, and much less likely to cause damage to the car not to mention the guys who drive those are in general more experienced drivers.
Flying isnt really a good idea. One way tickets are expensive. Gas alone is going to run you around $150, not to mention you need to get a room at least one night, figure another $50. So thats $200, plus plane ticket. Cheapest round trip ticket to Indiana you'll come across is gonna run ya about $350-400. Thats $550-600. Then you have to figure on doing this on a weekend so you dont lose time off work. About the only thing getting it yourself will do is prevent some truck driver from ramping your car up and down the carrier.
